Hi, this is my first post here so I apologize if it isn't in the right place. I'm looking to purchase an 800 gaming rig excluding case cost. The last time I built a computer doom 3 was the big release at the time and since then I've been out of the loop.

I'm going for a living room setup with steam in mind and as I was searching for CPUs I couldn't really decide... Fx 6350 seems to fit the bill pretty well and it has a great price compared to an i5 but as I said I'm pretty clueless.

Thanks alot, and if there is any input as to an overall build i would greatly appreciate it... I feel like I've been cramming for a test or something.

We would be happy to help, but we need to know what the rest of your planned rig is before we can make recommendations on a CPU. It would also be useful to know the following: Do you intend to overclock? Is this rig for pure gaming, or are there other planned uses? What country are you purchasing in? Do you have access to a Micro Center?

Thanks for the reply! As for your questions I live in the US and have access to a microcenter. The main purpose of the rig is for gaming on my tv via steams big picture mode. I plan on using the fractal designs node 605 case and do not plan on overclocking as i dont feel experienced enough to try... And the cost of cooling that may out me over budget. I also dont need an incredible amount of storage as i only play a game or two at any time.

Thanks again.

You actually have access to a Micro Center? Wow, don't get that answer often. Lucky you. :)
Here's my suggestion for your build:

Edit: Just looked up your case. Bit of an odd one, that. Do you know how good its airflow is? Because the 7950 I recommend (the Vapor-X edition) depends pretty heavily on good airflow. If that case doesn't have that, I'll need to tinker a bit with my suggested build.
