You usually do that by right-mouse clicking on the IDM file, put the mouse cursor on "Open with", then in the fly-out menu select "Choose default program". A window will pop up allowing you to select a program to open the file with, or if the one you want isn't a listed option, you can browse to the program you want to use. Make sure there is a check-mark in the box towards the bottom of that window that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".
