Playstation 3D 24" + GTX 650 Ti BOOST + TriDef 3D

Okay... Getting 3D to work has been no easy task; and while several supposedly promising solutions turned up in the forums, none of them seem to work for me... So here I am, with my annoying first-world problem, please hear me out...

The Sony Playstation 3D 24" Monitor was on for $99.99 at Bestbuy last Christmas, so I bought one for the hell of it. Up till this point, I've been using it in conjunction with an AMD Radeon HD 6870 + TriDef 3D. It worked fine, framerates were not great, but it worked. Recently though, I sold the HD 6870 and bought myself a nice Asus GTX 650 Ti BOOST Direct CU 2GB. Initially I decided to go nVidia because it had better native support for stereoscopic 3D. However I did not realize just how incompatible the Sony 3D display was, and I've been trying to get the 3D to work for hours.

I saw a work-around driver that supposedly enabled the GPU accerated 3D with 720p at 60hz or 1080p at 24hz. The driver was also designed specifically to work for this exact Sony display. Unfortunately the work-around driver doesn't support the latest nVidia driver. Coming to the conclusion that native 3D was not gonna happen, I decided to go with the software accelerated route again.

I looked into TriDef, and it supposedly supported nVidia cards. After playing around with it though, I've come to discover that the only reason I was able to get 3D content is because TriDef had an "AMD HD3D" option in its control panel. The Sony 24" Display is not in its compatibility list, and I've hit another dead end. I actually went out of my way and tried EVERY monitor listed in the control panel. Some of them would split the screen into two and activate the glasses, some of them would display the stereoscopic on screen but the glasses won't activate, and some of them would display stereoscopic, and activate the glasses, but they don't mix to provide 3D results.

So I'm stuck. Both methods have yielded no results, and I'm at a loss. Did I have the settings mixed up somewhere? Do I need to play around with the refreshrate some more? I refuse to believe that my combination of hardware-- nVidia 6 Series on the Sony Playstation 3D display, is a rare combination. So if anyone can help shed some light on the situation, it would be greatly appreciated!

The problem is the monitor is not 3D Vision compatible. Even if you use Tridef, you need a 3D Vision capable monitor for it to work correctly with an Nvidia card. That or Nvidia 3DTV play software, which is only compatible with some HD3D TV's. You are best off just using the drivers that work with that 3D hack you had working. It is the best you are going to get.

As per requested

I'll put it like this. You are wasting your time, even if you can get it to work with some magical workaround (which I can near guarentee you, you wont), you now have 2 obstacles.

1.) The performance hit from Tridef is GALACTIC. I'm using a 670 and haven't found a single game that I can actually play using Tridef, all because of the framerate.
2.) Alot of games simply don't work with Tridef, hell alot of games don't work with the Nvidia driver, and require a fix with the Helix tool.

Either give up or buy a new monitor.

I am well aware of the limitations of the Sony 3D display due to its incompatibility. However I'd like to get multimedia content working on it at the least, photos and movies. Since you seem to have gotten TriDef to work (despite its downfalls) would you mind helping me out with the set up?

Thank you for posting this question. I tried tirelessly for weeks to figure this out too. I found a link regarding the NVidia 3dplaystion mod which did not work for my 650M GT card. I finally gave up and then ran across your thread. I downloaded the Tridef 3D free trial and choose these options.

Manufacturer: (standard display types) -enter
Model: Side by Side

The rest automatically set itself.

I choose to test out Metro last light, Skyrim, Arkham City, and ME3. I had to manually set the playstation 3d tv to "side by side" mode when the game was in session for it to work. I am not sure about frame rates but I can tell you it is much cleaner and quicker than say Arkham City (3dmode) on PS3. I am pretty happy that this works for my Alienware M14xr2 running an HDMI to my Playstation 3DTV. Hope this will help you out or anyone else in the future. gs

I've been using TriDef in Power 3D mode with my PS3 monitor for months now and it works great. I am using the latest Nvidia drivers and Top to Bottom in 1080p mode.(image gets split)

I've also used higher resolution via super sampling and that works too with better image quality.

I too have a Sony 3D display with the GTX 650 Ti Boost graphics card and have been using tridef 3d for a while now, I have had no problems all you need to do is configure tridef to run in side by side mode and set the 3d display to also display is side by side mode and it works flawlessly with all the games I have tried. hopes this helps

Better late than never as I've posted this elsewhere but the problem is that Sony gimped the monitor with EDID info that hides it's true HDMI 1.4a 3d TV capabilities. There were soft mods that used to work to fake the EDID info but that stopped working many Nvidia drivers ago and could complicate the process later on. The EASIEST method is to just buy a Gefen HDMI Detective Plus and plug it inline with your display and your PC will see it as a Panasonic 720p 3d TV. This device will also capture the EDID info from any HDMI source display when you power it with the ac adapter and follow the program instructions which only takes a second. I grabbed the EDID info from a 1080p 50" Sony 3d HDTV at Best Buy after asking the guys in that department. Now it has the correct EDID info to run my display at native 1080p so I can use it like normal when not using 3d. Very annoying that Sony chose to do it this way but it is what it is and will cost about 80 bucks for the device that makes it work like it should have from the beginning.
