Good Morning All :)

The time has come to upgrade my sluggish 7 year old PC. It has served me well and still does most tasks well but when it comes to most games other than Diablo II it struggles.

I'm the kind of person who try to research something to death before committing cash to it, after much research I have decided an AMD Trinity based system would both carry a decent punch and not break my bank.

I'm an avid AMD fan and will not go anywhere near Intel for a PC system.

I will use the machine for general internet / computing use and also would like to play slightly older games such as Killing Floor or Left For Dead. I stress that I'm not too interested in the latest of games.

My queries are below, I would be grateful for any advice please :)

1 - Which MB should I go for out of these two choices and why?

ASRock FM2A55M-DGS
Gigabyte F2A85XM-HD3

Both look good and have good reviews and are quite similar Micro-ATX sized but I'm curious to hear what people think.

2 - Which CPU & amount of RAM is best?

A6 5400K 3.6Ghz with 8 GB RAM
A8 5600K 3.6Ghz with 8 GB of RAM if I can stretch to it or else will be 4 GB
A10 5800K 3.8Ghz with 4 GB RAM

3 - And finally probably the trickiest question of which RAM?

I get I need DDR 3 but get very confused over the speeds. Most people seem to like PC-1600 but is that the better option and what are the advantages? I'm not talking about benchmarks here, I'm just talking about would I notice a difference more than things being a fraction of a second faster?

Thanks in advance guys.

Ryan

"A10 5800K 3.8Ghz with 4 GB RAM" you can upgrade ram without loosing your current investment/ram easily but if you spend the money on a cpu and upgrade down the line you will be throwing away all the money you spent on your current system.

I have a Gigabyte in my amd based pc and its grate, so go with the "Gigabyte F2A85XM-HD3 " it also has a few more feature ie: usb 3.0

You only have 2 ram ports so your defiantly wont to go with one 4gb for now and then down the line put another 4 or an 8gb stick in. $gb is fine for most people.

For speeds that motherboard only supports upto 1866mhz although going above 1600mhz for gaming or 1333 for general purpose is ineffective.

TL;DR: Gigabyte F2A85XM-HD3 , A10 5800K 3.8Ghz with one stick of 4 GB RAM @ 1333mhz.

Thanks "lurkingshadow" for your response.

I have a query though, is it true that quad cores have issues with certain older games? I ask as I play things like Killing Floor, Half Life, Diablo 2, Starcraft 2?

I was offered advice by someone else to go for the A6 instead to ensure compatibility as that is dual core and then to think about a stand alone graphics card (one that certified to work with the dual graphics ability of the APU) for extra graphics power if I need it.

What do you think and also if you had £200 (my max budget) what would you buy?

Thanks :)

Defiantly go for that A10-5800k, Some older games do have some "problems" with quad cores. But the problems are mainly they don't support the extra cores so you get no extra power out of them, The other thin is if you spend 80 on a cpu now and then need to upgrade later you will have to throw that cpu down the drain and the 80 is waisted, where if you go for a 150 cpu and then get a graphics card latter only if you need it(7660D is still plenty powerfull for even modern games, the ps4 will be using an apu instead of a separate video card and cpu). On top of that you can put a better video card with the a10, then you can with the a4 or a6. Spend your money in a way you can upgrade if you need to so you dont waste any.
