Hi forum,

So a few weeks ago, my computers OS gave out on me, i left it a few weeks due to being preoccupied and used my old optiplex.

When i came to re-install my OS windows simply refused because apparently my HDD was GPT, even though my motherboard supports UEFI it just wouldn't let me install an OS

I cant format my HDD completely because i have files on there i need (which i funnily enough put on a separate partition just in case i had to re-install my OS *FAIL*)

So Ive ben on this epic journey to get my computer up and running lol. I took my optiplex hardrive put it into the new computer and loaded up windows to transfer the important files onto that hardrive but Windows XP doesn't recognize the GPT HDD, disk management can 'see' it but it says its GPT protective and i cant access it, ive hear i can use third party software to change the HDDto MBR but will that delete my data?

and also my HDD is only 1TB how can i format the drive to avoid future problems like this? all i want is a partition for data and one for the OS that are completely separate

THANK YOU

32-bit Windows cannot access a GPT partition, as you have found out.

Personally, I'd try using a Live-CD version of Linux to copy the files you want to save, instead of what Nikolay is suggesting. There's a bit of risk in trying to convert from GPT back to MBR, in that if something goes wrong, you risk losing everything on the disk. A Linux Live-CD is less likely to damage anything.

Once you recover your data, you can reconfigure the disk as MBR instead of GPT.
