DVD pesent in device manager and my computers, but will not read files.

Before deciding it is a hardware fault see if you can boot from a bootable CD or DVD
If it does boot then Google on upper filter driver
look for Microsoft fixit program (at microsoft.com)
Is this for both CD & DVD disks?
