Do I need to connect two wireless modem/routers together in a network to use them both in my house?

I will be adding a second roku in my basement and I'm not sure that my router will reach from two floors up. I have an extra router and thought I might plug it into the dsl/phone jack in the basement. Can I use that one independently (on my same Verizon internet account) or do I have to 'wire' them together and follow the advice (stated elsewhere) to network them. If I thought I could wire-connect them, I'd just stretch an ethernet cable to the roku - but I'm not sure I want to go through walls with cables.

Why not configure first router as multipoint bridge mode with AP and second one as point to point bridge? This way you will have the second router closer to the basement and shorter wired connection to roku.

My kids brand homes with wireless connections to game console as slow and annoying.
