i wanted to buy a lenovo y500 from a friends shop

it has a gt 650m

but since now lenovo is adding a 750m in the same machine i was wondering whether i should wait or buy one with a 650m

well so can i overclock the 650m to get
approx the same performance

how far does a overclocked gt 750m outperform an overclocked gt 650m

As far as I know, it is pretty much impossible to manually overclock mobile graphics cards (unless you get an alienware or otherwise custom made high-end laptop). I would go ahead and wait for the model with the 750m to come out.

I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y500 with a GT 750m (2 GB gddr5), and by using EVGA PrecisionX, I took the clock rates up from 941 Core ; 2499 Memory TO 1097 Core ; 3000 Memory.

The GPU temp usually stays around 71 C LOAD (I've seen it go up to 74 without my cooling pad) and bounces between 49 - 51 C idle while OC'd.

The performance difference overclocked is almost negligible (an extra <10 FPS), although, I am able to add 4x MSAA to Battlefield 3 (full detail, 1920x1080, overclocked) and achieve the same frame rate as when I am at stock speeds (no MSAA, full detail, 1920x1080).

I would say go for the 750M because in order to achieve the higher stock clock rates, nVidia had to do something to the chip, and given that... it has a lot more OC headroom. So therefore, not only does it support Open GL 4.3 vs the 650's 4.2 (lol big whoop) but it will also hold a decent amount of performance for games longer than the 650m whether you are willing to overclock it, or not.
