I am looking to build a pc. I am a university student. My school provides us with various software including windows downloads/product keys. Has anyone had any experience using product keys from Dreamspark/on the hub, when building a pc (no windows on the hard drive)? Also, the windows software they provide says upgrade version, but I was able to install it on my mac through parallels. Would that mean the version they provide us is the full version?

Thanks!

the ones ive always downloaded through dreamspark were the full version. im not sure if the upgrade version will work. look around and they should have the regular windows 7 or 8 .iso files to download somewhere

I found the .iso on the site, but I am worried when I go to enter the product key provided, it will be for an upgrade version and not the full retail version. Do you know if the keys provided are for full versions or upgrade?

Do you know if there is a difference between product keys of the full version and the upgrade version?

there is definitely a difference, but i dont know what it is. If you download the upgrade version then the full version it should give you completely different product keys because they are different products. you can download each product as many times as you want but it gives you one key per product. (w7 gives you a key, w8 gives you a different key, etc)

Ok thanks, I just can't tell which version, they are providing me, like I said I installed it on my mac with no previous windows version installed, so this makes me think it is a full version, do you know if there is anyone to check what kind of product key you have?

i dont know of any way. that doesnt mean there isnt any way though.

installing the upgrade version may work, but you'd hate to find out later that you were missing out on some important features when you could just have downloaded the full version for free.

the safest bet is to just download the one listed as a full version though. its free to you so you should take advantage of the service. i downloaded every operating system that i could while i was in school and just used them as i wanted to in VMs and as spares should i ever need them.

I've used Dreamspark before it'll tell you what version you're getting in the description, or at least it did when I used it just over a year ago. The software MS provides thru Dreamspark and the product keys are only good for 2years or so, may be longer depending on the course your taking, mine was only good for 2yrs on Win7. Try searching only for the OS and it should tell you upgrades and full installs in the product description.

It says upgrade in the title, but they use this version to install windows on people's macs, so wouldn't that mean its the full version? Theres nothing different between installing windows on a mac and from a clean hard drive, both have to be full versions. My main concern is that I dont want to build the computer with the assumption I will be able to install windows, then get to the part to enter the product key and find that it doesn't work because the product key I have is for the upgrade version. Also I will be installing from a usb from the .iso file provided from dreamspark.
