Moving Info from old hard drive to laptop

I bought a new laptop with Windows 8 to replace my old XP desktop. I took out my hard drive before recycling the tower and bought a SATA to USB converter. When I try to access the folders on my old hard drive it says I do not have the permissions to do so. What the heck!?!?!??! What do I need to do to transfer my documents from old hard drive to new computer?

Hello,
I agree with USAFRet, regarding not having security permissions of your older NTFS Win-XP files.
Each Win Account has a Security ID associated with it, and even though you choose the same Username on your new laptop you get a new Security Id, which doesn't have the same permissions as your old account did on the NTFS formatted drive. As Administrator, you have to take ownership of the folders and files to be able to copy them etc.
The security permissions set up on NTFS formatted drives can be very confusing, so if you are not used to adding or removing account names from folders/files, or changing any of the 6 permissions or 14 special permissions, don't feel bad. They can be frustrating.
Here is a URL that goes thru the steps to take ownership of folders/files, that might help get them over to your new laptop

Once they are on your laptop, then if need be you can change permissions for other accounts on the computer, or if you want to share them on your network or through the HomeGroup, you can.
