Hey People! I'm going to tell you my story.

I'm from Costa Rica and 2 years ago i bought a dell xps 9100 desktop. These days, it had has some problems. It freezes for no reason, so i friend of mine checked it and told me that the computer has a damaged motherboard.

I'm really dissapointed because it was a huge investment i did on that computer and now is not working at all. I don't know that much about computers but my goal is to fix it.

I have read some of this forum and it seems like you are the right people to help me. This is what i want to know:

What will be a compatible motherboard for my computer?

Where can i get it? (Remember I'm from Costa Rica, there is no problem if i have to ship it)

Would I be able to install it myself?

Thanks for your help and time!

I´m going to show you the specs of my PC:

Studio XPS 9100 Intel Core i7-930 processor (8MB L2 CACHE, 280GHz)

12 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHZ,6X2GB

ATI Radeon HD 4770 1024 GDDR

2TB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drivve 7200 RPM

¡Thanks for answering namdlo!

I know this may sound a little bit silly but i don´t like buying used things. However, this has been a bad experience with a brand new computer so i need alternatives. I checked the link you provide me and it says: # The item may be a factory second or a new, unused item with defects".... this means it could be damaged too.
I also would like to know if i would be able to install it myself, remember i dont know that much about computers but im not that idiot either( i'm a engineer student)

Thanks for your time namdlo

Sorry I didn't really look at the link - I was just using it as an example.

The main issue you're going to have is I don't believe the 9100 uses a "standard" motherboard - it's proprietary to Dell. You aren't going to find a "new" motherboard unless you get a factory replacement from Dell and that's probably going to run you in the neighborhood of $200+ if they still even have them.

If you can handle a screw driver you should be able to do it yourself :)

Oh, i get it now!. That link Calvin7 sent, does not look save at all. So i have to look used motherboards on ebay and look for a good one and the other way is to buy a new one directly from dell :/ . What happens is that i have never used ebay before, so im a litlle bit skeptical.

I'm gonna try with this http://www.ebay.com/itm/5DN3X-Dell-Motherboard-Studio-Xps-9100-System-Board-/221225216749?pt=Motherboards&hash=item33820ceaed
what do you think, namdlo?

Hi Kisianik!
Yesterday i saw that motherboard and its price is really nice, however, the website itself looked a little bit suspiciuos. I checked some reveiws about the webside, and some people called it as "scam". I don't want to be scammed.¿Do you know that webside, Kisianik?

Thanks for your time Kisianik!

unfortunately I saw those negative reviews, and considering your location I agree that my offer is no good for you.

No one asked you for the initial problem - freezing. I would question this problem relationship to motherboard. What if you change motherboard and problem still there?
Do you have any extra ATI video cards, if yes, can you swap with yours to see if freezing will go away?

Also, when you change motherboard, you would have to reinstall WIndows, so have you tried this way already, it is worth trying, because it could save you from wasting money.

Usually when motherboard is no good, you can not boot into WIndows, screen just blank and there is nothing happened inside your case.

Thanks for your advice Kisianik!

When my computer started to freeze, i was at time to use my warranty. Latin America support(which completly sucks) for Dell, came at my house, and changed my motherboard and hardrive. It worked fine like for 6 months. After that i began to have the same problems, so i suspected it was the motherboard.

I friend of mine, who knows about computers(actaully he runs a place where he repairs computers) checked it and told me it was the motherboard.

However, it would be cool to check those things you mentioned. When i bought the pc, i ordered it with the video card i mentioned on the specs. I have never upgraded my computer.

It would be nice if you tell me which test i could make to verify if my motherboard is the real problem.

Thanks for your time Kisianik!

ATI Radeon HD 4770 power requirements are Radeon 4770 - 26A and a 400-500W PSU minimum, in reality it is about 80 watts for the card alone.

You never said anything about your power supply, can you check the model - it is usually printed on the side of power supply upper left side of the sticker.

Something is killing your PC, we need to find out the real problem, because changing motherboard is just the way out for another 6 months or so.

Do you have friends who can let you use another ATI card, preferably weaker one, so it would use less power?

Hi Kisianik! Thata a real good question, what happens is that i do not know much about computers( im i civil engineer student), I dont know what thing is the power supply on the motherboard. I might think that is the box with lots of cables beause it sounds logic for a power supply.

When i read what you wrote, it felt like you read my mind. I think all this time that there is something else wrong with my computer that hurt my motherboard.

Today, i encouraged myself, and opened my computer. I found some cables unplugged and i think that it may be causing problems so i made a video showing those cables and also made a video with the stickers on the power supply that you told me so you can check the model. If you can´t see anything, you tell me so i remake the videos with a better camera.

Here are the videos, my english sucks sorry haha

And about the question about a friend's graphic card. My friends do not own computers with graphic cards, maybe if i just unplugged mine? what do you think?

I really appreciate your help Kisianik!

Power Supply, shortly PSU. You show this in the beginning of second video

Look at this picture, is it look familiar - part number V4NC2 525 watt
This one is exactly like yours

$(KGrHqF,!nkE8VNZy--0BPHc-Ebssw~~60_57.JPG

I don't this picture will stay for long, this is from eBay.
Anyway this is the specifications, the same part number, different model

20130121_124622.jpg

Look under DELL logo you see DP/N: V4NC2, and now look at your second video - you tried to focus on the small label with DP/N: 0V4NC2 extra zero in front of the number. DP/N - means Dell Part Number.

Anyway you have 525 watt with 3 rales of 18 Amperes each, if I understood this correctly, others can correct me.

Extra connectors inside your PC are extra power cables, no worries here.

I will need a bit more time to see if you have on board video, not sure (and I am about to go to sleep), so I will be back here tomorrow about the same time.

If you have extra port where you can plug your monitor and it is not video card, use it, let see what happens, you not going to damage your PC by doing so, everything will look large due to the standard VGA resolution of 800x600 or so, but wee need to find out if it will freeze or not.

Hi Kisianik!

There is another port where i can plug my monitor but it seems to be part of the graphic card. I had my computer off all this time because i didnt want to mess with it, i try to turn it on today and it doesnt run at all, it makes a sound , like two beeps. I looked in my dell manual,it said that it means NO RAM DETECTED ;(.

Im a little bit worried, i hope it isnt my ram :/.

Thanks for your time Kisianik!

The situation with diagnostics is begining to go over my level of expertise so I strongly suggest for you to join Dell Community Forums and post your problem there - Desktop General Hardware Forum http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514.aspx
Join and post with title "XPS 9100 motherboard problem", this is final solution place.
If nothing helps to properly diagnose your problem, you always can purchase your motherboard as it was advised above.

If you post this problem at Dell, post a link to it here, I am member of Dell Community forums as well, and will try to help you there as well, but you need more help from people who knows how to troubleshoot Dells!

I started having all kinds of weird issues with my xps 9100 . video card started making all kinds of noise. things would just stop working etc etc replaced the power supply with a 750 watt psu off the shelf from the local computer mega outlet. Bolted straight in no problems.I also d/l a program called speed fan and it showed temps in the 200 range on the processor which seemed rather high to me so i replaced the cpu heatsink/fan with a much larger unit and the temps are now in the 120/135 range. The hint of the problem started with the fans all making alot of noise and running full tilt alot now everything is quiet again .

I have a Studio XPS 9100 also, and am on my third motherboard. Luckily, I kept the extended warranty rolling, but it's been a pain. Seems to be a common issue with this computer.
