To Upgrade or not to upgrade my desktop

OK.
Here is my issue I currently have a AMD 965 BE in my desktop system which only gets used for gaming on Monday and Tuesday. (i.e. my days off) The rest of the time I'm using my Lenovo Y580 for gaming.

I mostly play World of Tanks and War Thunder on the desktop. With some COD:BO2, BF3 and Far Cry 3 mixed in for flavoring.)

So I'm thinking of upgrading to either and i5 (so new cpu and m/b) or an FX cpu (so new cpu).

So given how I use the system what does the community think I should do?

Current Specs:

AMD 965 BE
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus - CPU Cooler
GIGABYTE GA-970A-D3 AM3+ rev. 1.4
Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 GB
27" Samsung LED Monitor at 1920 X 1080 resolution
1 TB Western Digital BE HD 7200 RPM
12GB DDR3 Ram
Thermaltake 600W P/S
DVD -+ R/W

I have not overclocked the CPU yet but I could with the cooler I have.

Thanks in advance.........

Scott

Since we don't know what games you are playing it's very hard to give an answer.

If you're playing MineCraft then you don't need an upgrade.

Some games are more CPU intensive and some are more GPU intensive.

Please include some more details.

Hey,

What games are you playing and at what resolution? If you are looking to upgrade your CPU I would wait a month as Intel will release new models soon. Overall I would go with an i5 3570k or wait for the new ones. However if you are doing video rendering or certain other tasks then a 8 core Fx may benefit you. In most cases the i5 has an edge when it comes to gaming, however the Fx is not bad either, but it uses more power for overall less gaming performance.

Hope this helps!

World of Tanks is VERY cpu intensive.

I just upgraded a friend from an A10-5800k to an i5-2500k and he couldn't be happier with the results.

Just remember that WoT is single core only (it's a poorly written program). Intel crushes AMD on single core programs.

You should probably be looking at an FX chip as you have an upgrade path with your current motherboard. Could you peek in and see the model on the motherboard? I know you listed it the basic model, but the revision number will come in handy (someone with a Gigabyte board could probalby give you the exact location). Over at http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4306#ov Gigabyte, you can look up the FX support for your motherboard revision under Support.

Once again if your main game is World of Tanks is it very cpu intensive (single core).

The AMD processors do well when the program supports multiple cores - the 8350 has 8 cores. They do NOT do well when the program uses 4 or less - this is where the Intel processors shine.

Core for core AMD can not compete with Intel.

I'm not trying to tell you that AMD isn't the way to go - you already have a base to build on. I'm just trying to provide you with the best experience based on your requirements.
