hi, I want to replace my current computer so I cando more gaming. I want an ssd to boot the os. can i just install windows on a new ssd and then plug in my old hard drives and have access to all my files? if so will I have to create new desktop short cuts for everything? I'm not worried about cloning my os becuase i can get win 7 or 8 for free because i'm an IT student. I can just fresh install the ssd. will this work? Is there something better thats not too complicated that I could do. I'm basically just after having the same computer, that will be all new hardware, if that makes sense.

If you aren't cloning your existing to the SSD and installing a new version of the OS you're going to "lose" your existing programs.

They will still be on the hard drive but their settings won't be in the new registry.

You can re-install over the top of the existing and save most of your existing settings...
