We don't know what future games will be, but the i3 is a good gaming CPU that can be had for a low price. The i3 is a dualcore however it has Hyper-Threading which means each core acts like two so the i3 has 4 threads like a quad-core. Otherwise, more expensive processors such as the i5-3350P/3570K are better. Also important in gaming is the graphics card.

Dual cores are already being phased out as single cores once were. The tech world evolves in a cycle of software continually catching up to hardware. The software market is catching up to 4+ cores and being coded for more and more cores with every day that passes. I mean for general usage the i3 will be fine going into the future but as far as gaming there are already a number of modern titles that show the i3 to have a major disadvantage when compared to 4+ core CPU's. If you are already on an intel board invest into one of their i5 or i7 quads, they are great chips. If open AMD offers alot of bang for buck with the 6300 and above.

The i3 will probably stay relevant and very capable for about another two years at maximum. By then, multicore fever will be in full-swing, and the i3 will suffer.

This isn't exactly how it works. Far from it actually.
