External/Portable hard drive (exFAT) won't show up in My Computer

Hi, I have a 500GB Hitachi Touro USB 3.0 portable hard drive. I've formatted it to the exFAT file system so that it could be used with other devices. However now I'm unable to view the contents of the portable hard drive on my Windows 7 laptop.

I can see the device name under the safely remove hardware icon. The laptop even makes the sound when I connect it but nothing shows up on My Computer.

Can anyone help out. Thanks in advance.

Thanks. I think it was actually formatted by a media device.

I haven't tried it on other Windows's PC's and no it doesn't show up under device manger or disk management.
How would I add a drive letter?

I've looked again at device manager. I noticed that another drive does show up under disk drives when i connect it but this doesn't have the same name as the portable hard drive.
