I woul like to connect a Roku device to a proxy server through my router. How can this be done? Thanks in advance.

It is unlikely you can get it to work through a proxy unless you control the proxy and then it would be easier to configure to route around it. Since the roku itself does not understand proxy you would have to have a transparent proxy or insert another device to forward the traffic. The main issue is that roku uses ports other than just 80 and 443 and that is dependent on the site you are watching.

If what you really want to do is use a roku in a country that has services like netflix etc blocked you will need to use a vpn service that supports vpn from your router. You will also need a router that can do VPN. I would recommends a router that you can load dd-wrt on since it has many more options than most consumer routers.

Bill - Many thanks for the advice. Your suggetion to "insert another device to forward the traffic" looks like a good idea. For example I am thinking of using a second router as a repeater/access point connecting to a static IP through the first/main router - would that work? My connection would be :

Roku -> Router2 (as a repearter connecting to a static IP) -> Router1 (DHCP through my ISP) -> Internet (link to static IP server)

If this might work, then I would pay for a static IP to try this out.

Thanks once again.

Yes in general it will work but the exact solution will depends where you get a service from. If you are still really going to use a proxy you will need to use a PC running as a router. There are commercial solution that can do this but they are very expensive for home use. If you just plan to run a vpn tunnel to a service provider that is something a number of routers can do well.

I did more research and came up with two VPN options: (i) HMA, (ii) StrongVPN. These two provide DD-WRT router options and also PC/Mac/Tablet clients for encrypted vpn tunnels. Many thanks once again - I have learned a lot in the past week!
