Geezz.. i don't know why i have'nt upgraded to HDMI from DVI-D ..its stupid..

And now when i decided to do so, i got swamped.... and amazed of the amount of spam(poor quality products) that is out there..

I'm looking for a cable that will connect my desktop with my monitor, i guess max 2M. And to safeguard me from buying crap i was going to be spending aprox 20€ at a well known retailer that will send me the stuff without adding additional shipping costs.

But i found a lot of places that will sell me a a cable for ..around 2€/M (without shipping)

Now the question is....

What is the general rule of thumb when buying HDMI cables? and what to avoid?

al input is welcomed bcuz i know next to nothing of this, and i'm sure even the tiny details will serve me well.

..............good day to yous.. .............

DVI-D to HDMI isn't an upgrade, they are more or less the same signal with the same image quality. As for what to avoid when buying hdmi cables... Er, nothing really, they should be fairly cheap. Though HDMI can carry an audio signal with it so if thats what you were wanting then yeah I suppose its an upgrade.

HDMI has a couple of different version, I forget which adds which features but google is your best friend, check it out and see if you need any of those features, if so grab a cable that supports that version.

General rule is to buy the second cheapest. HDMI is a digital cable, so when it works it works the same for 2€ or 200€ per meter. The cheapest cable is ok if you plug it once and forget about it. If you plan on reattaching it frequently you need one that is slightly more expensive. The cheapest ones have frail connectors, that are easily damaged when attached/detached.
Make sure to get a proper version of your cable though - 1.3, 1.4 - depending on your needs.

DVI and HDMI have the same video signal, so the only reason to use HDMI over DVI would be if your monitor has built in speakers and you would like to use them. Most monitor speakers are terrible though, so you're really better off using headphones or getting a pair of speakers for your desk. As far as cables go though, an HDMI cable is an HDMI cable. Retail stores mark them up like crazy, but you can get them very cheap on the internet. There is no benefit to paying more for an expensive HDMI cable.

Sounds like you al think that 20€ for 2M is to much. what is this i see on a lot of the cheap ones "with ehternet"?

I was indeed thinking of plugging it in then forgetting about it. but what is this 1.3-1.4 and what would it mean if i cant find these figures?

You can read more about different versions of HDMI standard here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Version_comparison

Find out what features do you need and what version of HDMI your devices have and choose appropriate cable version. It's always a good idea to buy the newest one. They are compatible backwards.

As mentioned above - changing dvi to hdmi doesn't make sense in your case.
