Will a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO fit in a Thermaltake Versa II case?

I recently bought the Thermaltake Versa 2 case and i'm planing on getting an aftermarket CPU cooler so i'm not sure if it will fit in my case. If not, then i'll just get a CM Gemin II M4

Hello,

Your case has a CPU cooler height limitation of 155mm (check the specs here). But the CM Hyper 212 EVO is 159mm tall (specs here), so it won't fit. However, I don't suggest to buy the Gemini II M4, it's much too expensive comparing to the cooling results. There are a lot of tower CPU coolers shorter than 155mm and they have very good cooling performance. Classical design coolers are not that good.
One praised for both performance and silence is the Thermalright True Spirit 120m. There's also a simple 120 version, but the m variant means the heatpipes are bent so that the fan is not situated above the memory sticks, thus allowing you to use memory coolers. And it's not very expensive, it should be in the same price range as CM Hyper 212 EVO. What is your CPU socket, maybe I can recommend some other coolers, this was just the first that came to my mind. It's also helpful if you mention the cooling needs (what is your CPU model, TDP if you know it, and if you plan to overclock).

My CPU socket is AM3+ and i currently have an unlocked AMD Athlon II X3 445 (now phenom II X4 B45) and i am planning on overclocking it which is why i want to buy an aftermarket cooler for it. I also plan on upgrading to an FX 8350 but i won't OC it or at least not until i really have to

Your unlocked CPU, as well as the planned FX 8350, have a high TDP of 125W. With OC, TDP can get a little higher. The CPU cooler I mentioned should be enough, provided that you don't have so much space for the cooler. The best ones are around 160mm (which don't fit), so Thermalright True Spirit 120M would remain my first choice.
As alternatives, you can go with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev. 2 (not the best, but good), Scythe Ninja Mini or Scythe Ninja 2 (I'm not sure about these two monsters whether they can be fit on an AM3+ socket, though; otherwise, performance is very good).
As alternative, you can go with any big-ass "classical" design cooler, but not low profile like CM GeminII M4. Few examples: Scythe Grand Kama Cross, Noctua NH-C12P, Cooler Master GeminII S, Scythe Zipang. Look for heatpipes (copper), high mass (500g or more) and big fan (90mm).
Probably most important in your conditions is to have good air flow in your case, especially exhaust around the CPU. Your case provides you with plenty options for mounting case fans, so spending a little on a well-placed case fan can yield better results than a very expensive CPU cooler.

I think it should fit. Considering in the pictures of the case on the thermaltake site. The cooler shown on the pics is a thermaltake frio advance which is 159mm in height as the 212 EVO is. And since the side panel of the case is bent to the outside. it will only block the placement of a 120mm fan on the upper spot though i will set the rear fan for intake which will blow on the 212 EVO thus making the effect of it having 2 fans xD

Is it worth getting a CM hyper TX3? Almost all coolers you mentioned aren't available in my country. The only brand you mentioned that is available is the noctua. The brands here available are: cooler master (including water coolers), thermaltake (only big coolers), Xigmatek (a few smaller models , Gaia and Loki) and that's it.

The TX3 is cheap, but does not deliver very good cooling capabilities. If you can't find other brands and if you say the 212 EVO fits, then buy this one. It's only 4mm taller than the requirements of Thermaltake Versa case, and if you can't make it fit, you can cut the tips of the heatpipes.
Your solution about air flow on the other hand, I wouldn't follow it. First of all, you need to mount the CPU cooler the other way around (usually it is fitted with the fan above the memory sticks) and then the hot air remains in the case. Of course, having positive air flow will push the air out of the case, but mounting a fan on top of the case (right above the CPU) should deliver better results IMO. Anyway, I don't think there is only one/right way of doing it, so go ahead and try it, then tell us how it went. :)

Well it won't be anytime soon because i'm not sure when i'll buy it. and the reason i need an aftermaket cooler is because i want to OC this CPU since its still too slow even with the core unlocked (this thing really needs a L3 cache otherwise its useless in gaming) and for future upgrades. The stock cooler is doing its job quite well but its noise when the CPU is on load is quite annoying :D

i also measured the space between the bottom of my CPU cooler to the place where the side panel goes. Its exactly 160mm and plus the side panel's bend it would fit perfectly if the 212 EVO's height is measured with the heatpipe tips at the top.

I know this reply is kinda late, but....
The short answer to your question is a definitive yes. I currently have the 212 EVO in my Versa II and it has about 1/4 inch of clearance.
I have my AMD FX-6300 overclocked from 3.5 to 4.2 and it runs comfortably while under heavy load.
PCmark had the biggest impact on temperature of any testing I did, and even then the CPU stayed under 55C and only peaked that high for a brief moment.

Hi,

Does this cooler with the Versa allow room for top or side fans?

Thanks very much

There's plenty of room for top fans, but the Versa II doesn't have side fan mounting holes. If you intend to drill holes to add a side fan then the answer is yes, as long as you're not trying to put the fan beside the CPU cooler. Not only is there very little room between the 212 and the side of the case, the airflow wouldn't work well from the side because it would hit the cooler from the wrong angle. If your intent is to add a fan over the PCI slots, you should have room. I wouldn't really recommend it though, the Versa II has great air flow from the bottom and front and then out the top and back. When I have a chance I'll post a picture of my case layout so you can see where it has room.
