HDD password reset

my friends laptop is an emachine e620 and her HDD is locked how do I get it unlocked. As soon as the windows logo comes on it reboots itself

Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.

As you power up the machine, tap Function 8 several times then from the Advanced Boot menu, choose "Disable automatic restart on system failure". That produces a Stop Error message on a blue screen. Note the 0x0000?? code and ANY_WORDS_JOINED_UP buy underscores and post them back here. Someone will be able to advise you further.

Aside point - you went sixteen hours without a reply because we don't advise on password problems so fewer people looked at your post. Edit the title to "XP startup problem" or similar and you might see more suggestions.
