HD6950 won't overclock at all?

(I'm reposting this from the Overclock forums because a) this place seems more active, b) that whole forum seems more concerned with CPU overclocks and c) I'm really confused by this. If this is wrong and shouldn't be done, please let me know so I can delete the thread! Not trying to jerk anyone around, just looking for some help)

I have an ASUS HD6950 2gb (factory overclocked to 810Mhz) card. Thanks to the dual bios switch, I unlocked the extra HD6970 shaders long ago and have been running them unlocked smoothly with no issues for months now.

Recently, I've been trying to overclock it (somewhat modestly) but nothing seems to take. I downloaded MSI Afterburner and managed to fix the screen-flickering issues it initially had, but now I'm having trouble with the actual overclock itself. Assuming that the HD6950 was basically the same card with some shaders locked up, I tried to get it to the same clock frequencies as the HD6970. Jumped the voltage to 1.175 from 1.100 (as per the 6970) and jumped clock cores to 880Mhz and 1375Mhz (memory) respectively. Driver crash about 5 minutes into Skyrim. Tried jumping the voltage up to 1.200V. Driver crash again, a little later this time. Dropped memory overclock to 1300Mhz - same.

I'm confused. I was under the impression that the 6950 and 6970 were essentially the same card, running with some BIOS limitations. This does not seem to be the case... any advice? While I am new to overclocking in general, I'm relatively cautious and researched extensively. People are overclocking these cards well above what I'm trying, without issue? Running the latest ATi beta-drivers. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Even a very minor overclock - clocking the core to 840Mhz with a .005 boost to the voltage - fails with a driver crash? Is something wrong with the card itself?

They are not entirely the same, the 6970 uses faster memory with different timings.
Quite few unlocked cards have failed early due to memory problems, so you're lucky you only unlocked the shaders or you might now be looking for a new card.
I found the same thing with my own XFX 6950: it would baulk at anything over 880 MHz and was less than stable at that frequency with the shaders unlocked but would run happily at higher speeds in its stock configuration.

The backup BIOS remains untouched this end, so if that is the problem, I can switch back over to the stock BIOS with the switch and try again?

Alright, that's also an option. I'll try that one tomorrow! Thanks for your help so far, I'll report back after I give it a shot.
