PC crashing when under heavy loads. Please help.

I purchased a radeon 7850 core edition to replace my 7450. Before with my 7450 my PC could run games at the best it could for as long as I wanted. But now when i use the 7850 my PC crashes between 15 minutes to 45 ( depending on the game im playing). When i bought the 7850 i also upgraded my PSU to a corsair 650W which is plenty enough to run all the specs. I know the PSU is not faulty because i tried it with my old 7450 and the PC ran fine again.

Also when under heavy loads before crashing there are two things that always happen. 1. My monitor displays faint flickering bars passing by my screen as if it was an old cheap television. 2. There is an almost painful to the ears high pitched 'whirring' sound coming from the case which i cannot figure out which part is making.

And finally which makes this even more of a mystery to me is that i know somebody who works with a person who is very savvy with PCs so i lent it to them to try and figure out what was happening. They used the same power plugs as i did and for him somehow the PC could run games for as long as he wanted. Brought the PC home and still crashes for me.

Specs: 3rd generation intel i5, 8gb RAM (not shure what brand ), corsair 650W power supply, radeon 7850 core edition 1gb, hard drive ( not sure how much storage).

If you have any questions please ask, or any solutions you can think of please share them with me. Thank You.

So the PC itself ran fine at another household?

Are you plugging the PC straight into the socket on your wall or using an adapter/power brick of some kind? Could also have something to do with too much voltage running through one fuse. Causes all the light bulbs in my room and in the corridor outside to burn out in just a couple months.

Was he playing the same games with the same settings?

Is his place cooler than yours?

By him running it fine you have eliminated software driver issues. I would guess temperature issues. That whine you are hearing is probably the fan on the video card going really high. Run the computer with the case side panel off for a day and see if that changes anything. If it does you will probably need a few more case fans for circulation. Run some temp monitoring program like HW Monitor to see the temps of the CPU, GPU, and system under load.

The easiest way to test if additional fans will help is to remove the side panel and put a home fan next to the machine. This will also help to find out if you have an overheating issue. As the previous poster said install some temperature monitoring software for your system.

Sorry for the lack of info

All of the temperatures were in my PC before it crashed were completely normal for being under a load GPU:55 degrees, CPU 47 degrees and everything else was fine

Im and plugging my PC straight into a wall outlet that also has my router in the other socket and my monitor's power goes straight to another wall outlet with nothing plugged in to the other socket. The only other electronics in the room are 3, 40W light bulbs.

The place the other person tested the PC at is just a few degrees off of the one in my house. And he ran the exact same games that i had ran when it crashes. Also for every time i have ran the PC and it crashed it has been with the side panel off (and a extra large fan pointing directly in the case one time but with no difference).

Thank you very much for the quick responses.

Im probably going to see if i can borrow a UPS from somebody because those things are kinda pricey and i would like to make sure that it will fix the problem before i purchase one.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I read online that RAM when hot could crash your system, could this be why my PC is crashing? Because my PC can be idle, surf the web, and even play non intense games like N64 and GameCube emulators without crashing because it doesn't make my PC that hot.

If any answers or suggestions please reply. Thanks

(Edit): also is it ok that my Windows Experience Index says that all my sub scores are 7.9 and processor being 7.5 but my primary hard disk is 5.9?

RAM doesn't really get hot except under extreme memory overclocking procedures. RAM modules that are incompatible with one another, damaged or inproperly installed can cause your system to crash under heavy CPU loads. It would still not explain why your computer did not crash at your friend's house but does at yours.

I guess you could run something like Prime95 with small FFTs for 12 hours or so and see if that would crash your system at one point. This would point toward either a heat-related issues or CPU, chipset or memory error. You should also monitor the temps during the whole run by keeping a HWmonitor running in the background. Notice that you cannot be using the computer while it's stress testing the CPU.

Even then, it would not explain why your PC worked at your friend's house...

For checking the installation of RAM you can just pop it out and then place it back in and see if you BIOS or CPU-Z can detect all of it.

You can run Prime95 Blend for 24hrs straight utilizing 50% or more of your memory. If you run into any errors during the run, you have faulty or incompatible memory.

But as I said, there's a high chance that what you are experiencing is not associated with memory in any way.

all right thanks for the advice, il run the Prime95 Blend as soon as i get the chance

(Edit) when i open the program and select Blend it says "Number of torture test treads to run: 4. is this right, or should i change it?
