my dell inspiron N4050 display resolution is generic PnP monitor on standard VGA, how do i make it display above 1024x768.

Right click on the desktop, choose screen resolution, set to 1366 x 768

From the description it seems like you do not have your video drivers installed if the GPU is showing up as standard VGA there is something wrong.

Dells typically show as generic - they use the base windows driver. Even then, you can still change the resolution. It's a function of what the screen will support.

If it is a VGA monitor most likely the resolution will not go above 1024x768 in the OS. Try installing the graphics driver. If it is a digital monitor higher resolutions can be supported.
