Can connect/identify/duplicate with an external monitor but not extend

I was using a Dell Inspiron with Windows Vista and I connected an external display and was able to extend teh display across the two screens.

However, I have now plugged the same external monitor into my Acer Aspire Notebook with Windows Starter and all I can do is duplicate the screen onto both or use only the external or built in screen, I cannot duplicate.

Control Panel > Adjust Screen Resolution. The picture there clearly shows two monitors, but when I click 'identify' I either get both monitors showing '1|2' when they are duplicated or the monitor I am currently using as my main display showing '1' and the other monitory not using switched off.

On my previous set up I was able to click 'identify' and the built in laptop screen showed '1' and the external monitor showed '2' and I can extend the screen across both of them. However now on the CP > Adjust Screen Resolution page I only have three options:

Duplicate
Show Desktop only on 1 i.e. built in
Show Desktop only on 2 i.e. external

I have tried starting my laptop with screen attached and attaching the screen after the laptop is loaded, they both produce the above result.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
