Would this CPU bottleneck the gtx 670?

Hello everyone
I got a pc made 5 years ago and it has:
Intel(R) Core(TM)i7 CPUU 920 @ 2.67 Ghz
Asus rampage ii extreme
12 gigs of ram (2x4+2x2 @ 1600 Mhz )
Corsair HX1000W PSU

I will replace the gtx 295 because its half dead and on idle @ 75 C and when im trying to play some Dota 2 it reaches 120 C and then pc turns off.

I am looking to get the Gtx 670 ASUS DIRECTCU II OC edition.
Will it bottleneck with my current setup?

I am going to slowly upgrade both the mobo and the CPU at some point the upcoming months, i just need the graphics card urgently (and one that will last for like 5years decently) thats why i want to get that now.

Thanks : )

I know there are a zillion threads about this but.
Would it perhaps be better for me to NOT get a 670 and get something like 7950 and save the money for a new socket mobo + new cpu?
My point is i want the graphics card (and i was thinking asus 670 dcu II OC) to last for 3-5 years and be able to play games in a good level, like everything max now-1 year from now, and at high settings for the rest of the years.

I'm really confused with it and i don't want to spend my money in a wrong way :>

Gets 770 since its getting out later this month.
This should work for 5 years but you allways can use Nvidias SLI with another 770 😉

Hope it helps!

There will be a small restriction, the i7 is an older generation of chip after all but I'd say you would be better off getting a reasonable CPU cooler and giving that i7 a good overclocking rather than spending several hundred dollars on an upgrade than will give a fairly small gain in performance. Do not forget the i7 has Hyperthreading enabled and if you regularly use software that takes advantage of it you'll need to replace it with a current i7, further increasing the upgrade cost.

As for that coozie i have a Corsair A50 cpu cooler, not anything huge, but at least its not the stock cooler
I like your idea and i can give an OC shot to my cpu enen though i am too much of a noob at OCing, but its so easy nowadays isnt it :)

Thing is i can't play anything with my gtx 295 now so ill have to take drastic measures!
And let's say that the card comes out at the end of may i suspect i will be able to get my hands on it mid june or something (living in Greece) plus i suspect that it will be overpriced and that only the stock company ones will be available for some time

Prices shouldnt be much higher (5-10€) and there already are non stock 770s.

Shame you're forced into making a decision now, but it's not common to find the 'old' card prices dropping too much after the release of new hardware these days so it looks like you are forced into getting the GTX670.
Overclocking has its hazards, even with the protection built into more modern chips it is still possible to damage them. Do your research, understand what you will be doing, take it steadily and you'll be fine.
Toms has a useful sticky in the Overclocking Forum to get you started and if you have questions either Google or post in the Overclocking Forum.

Pff tadej now you made me thinking
Since the 770 will no doubt be better than 670 and for approximately the same ammount of money
with higher Vram , better technologies in general

Perhaps i should wait and see, and no gaming until then
i just want something that will endure and can play games at high levels for the upcoming years.

My brain is going to explode )

My I7 920 @ 2.93 Ghz (crappy Dell motherboard, can only OC via setfsb) is slightly bottlenecked by my 7870XT @ 1215 Mhz core / 1600 Mhz memory. So yes, you will experience a slight bottleneck on the CPU with a GTX 670 or better.

If you can OC your 920 to somewhere around 3.5Ghz (should be quite easy) I don't think you would have many issues.

In my experience the bottleneck only happens in newer games. Specifially for me, Far Cry 3 (and Blood Dragon) and Crysis 3.

On average my FX8350 @ 4.6 Ghz will have framerates that are 10 - 25 FPS faster than my I7 - 920 @ 2.93 Ghz with the same video card.

That said, if you are going to be replacing everything in your current system over the coming months, get the fastest video card in your budget. The upcoming GTX770 looks to be slightly faster (up to 10%) than the current GTX680. Pricing from what I have read, seems to be on par with the current GTX680 with an MSRP of $449. There could be deals and things that bring the price to around $400 but I wouldn't count on that.

Thanks for your answer ish and wow , nice certifications you got at your signature :) good job man, i admire those

I will try to find out how fast i can get my hands on a 770 in Greece, and if its not wayy off the release date i might give it a shot.

Also do you happen to know if other than reference boards from nvidia will be "ready to go" on the same date?Like tf,dcuii,wf3 or is it going to be long way until we see those

Thanks for noticing the certifications. A lot of time and work went into those and it's just starting to pay off with owning my own business.

The release date for the GTX700 series will likely be either May 23 or May 30, I have seen both dates listed at several sites. Factor in a week or two for the cards to work their way through the world wide distrubution channels and I would guess that the availibility for these cards, for most people will be the beginning to middle of June.

As for boards being available that are non-reference boards, I don't know. I would say that the manufacturers will eventually make non-reference designs. I have read that the GTX780 and 770 will be using the GTX Titan cooler. That cooler should be very good, especially on the GTX770 which appears to just be an overclocked GTX680.
