Comcast Cable Modem causing Routers to hang?

My setup is as follows ( pretty basic ):

- Comcast is my ISP since I moved into my house.
- Various Wireless/Wired Routers connected to the Cable Modem ( currently a Netgear WNDR4300 router ).
- Wireless Connections : Various Devices such as Laptops ( MacBook and Google ChromeBook ), Smartphones ( both IPhone and Android ), Wireless HP Printer and Tablet ( 1st Gen IPad )
- Wired Connections : Laptop

The problem that I have is that the Netgear Router would hang after a few days where ALL Wired or Wireless Connections would be down. Since I cannot connect to the Router via the Wired or Wireless connections, I cannot troubleshoot the issue with the router. When it's down, I have verified that the Wi-Fi signal that is being broadcasted goes up and down ( using my Cell Phone Wi-Fi Analyzer ) when I lose connection. When I check my Wired Connection...the LAN connection cannot be established.

I looked at various options to troubleshoot this that could be causing the router to hang:

1 ) Finally swapped out the old Comcast Cable Modem.
- I had an old Cable Modem.....so I finally had Comcast send me a BRAND NEW ( not refurbished ) Cable Modem. It's a different Cable Modem model. With a new router and Cable Modem, it would hang between 2-4 days as opposed to once every 1-2 days for the old Cable Modem. When the router hangs like this....I am able to verify that if I bypass the router and connect my laptop via Ethernet to the Cable Modem directly......the Internet Connection from Comcast is still up but the Netgear router was simply hung.

2 ) Changed various Routers.
- Prior to this month, I had a Linksys Router for the last 2 years where I would lose connection after 1-2 days. I thought that it was the router that was bad. So, I swapped it out with an OLD Netgear router that is a few years old....same problem ( surprisingly ) where it would do the same thing after 1-2 days. I got a new Netgear WNDR4300 Router. Did the same thing but it would last a few days longer before hanging. I returned it and got the same router from AMAZON thinking that the router that I received was simply bad. Same result with the brand new router. Same result with varying lengths of stability with 4 different routers.

3 ) Changed Router Settings on Netgear.
- I changed the MTU Size to 1400 from the default of 1500 and we got the same result. I then lowered it to 1200 and will see if we get any improved results. I had thought that it was maybe some computer that is next door that is simply causing the problem by trying to connect....so I changed the Wireless Connection login/password and disabled the WPS Login Access. Same results where the Router would hang.

4 ) See if the Devices connected is causing the Problem.
- Since I have various devices that connect to the Router, I started looking at the devices that would connect that may cause it to hang ( maybe some software or App on those devices is causing a problem )...since there will likely be some device that is ALWAYS connected to the router on a 24x7 basis. I had thought that I had narrowed it down to my Hard-Wired LAN connected Laptop ( not using a Wireless connection ) but then the Router hung the other day when I was out for the day....with no Wireless or Wired Device connected. I left the house and the router was up and running...I then return later in the evening ( at least 8 hours ) and the router was hung with no device attached during that timeframe.

5 ) Checked Router Logs.
- When the router hangs, I can't connect to it to see what happened to the router as the connections were lost. If I reset the Router....the logs get lost and I can't see what happens. When the router is up and running, I can check the logs and only find some DoS attacks ( common ones from Google, Yahoo, youtube, etc. ) and some stupid LexMark Device trying to connect to my Wireless Connection ( which I think is harmless ) but all of the "lights" are still on in front of the router.

So this is where I am now.....changed Cable Modems, while using different routers, no log files that suggest any hacking of any sort and I don't think the problem is with the devices connected that is causing it to hang....but getting the same result regardless of configuration or device used.

Has anyone encountered this issue?

I am at a complete loss as I do not know what is the cause of the Router hanging. At this point, I am inclined to think that the Comcast Cable Modem is doing something to my router ( or vice versa, regardless of which Router it is ) and over the course of time....the router hangs. Something that is causing the router to hang.

I am assuming you are REBOOTING the modem when you have the issue to switch to computer, so this may still be a modem issue which the power cycle is fixing. If this is the case there should be some logs supporting this, try going to 192.168.100.1 at the modem, and pulling up the signal levels and logs.

What you SHOULD see.

downstream levels between -8 and +10
downstream SNR above 35
upstream levels between 35 and 51

Anything outside those specs you may want to request a tech visit or redo your internal wiring yourself. It is not a FREE repair if they are out of spec becasue of your house cable, it is if it is becasue of their plant/drop. The house cable and splitters are YOUR property and your responsibility even if they put them in.

Note generally if the plant is faulty, it affects MULTIPLE customers not just you. The drop will just affect you however in most cases.
