Internet cuts out after 2 minutes

I just built a PC for my brother and he is using an old linksys WRT110 router I gave him. He has an ASRock H77 Pro4/MVP mobo with gigabit internet. I never had problems with the router until I myself got an ASRock Z77 Pro4 mobo with gigabit internet. I had the money to buy a gigabit router and that seemed to fix my problem, but my brother doesn't have the money. Every time we power cycle the modem and router, we have internet for about 2 minutes, then it cuts out. We lose the internet for both wifi devices and the hardlined desktop. I had him bypass the router, and internet works fine for the desktop. He has no money and doesn't need a gigabit router, but is there compatibility issues with a non-gigabit router and a mobo with gigabit lan? The problem with the router arose once we had gigabit lan...but I didn't think that should matter. I am also wondering if the issue could be related to intel smart connect software? Any help would be appreciated. We have a cable ISP. Thanks!

Where are you getting these $20 routers? Regardless, not everyone can afford to just buy new things when one isn't working. Someone suggested turning off the DHCP? Is that needed for an ISP that uses dynamic ip?

No offense but if you just built a PC, you can offer a $20 router...

A more through searched showed me AirLink 101 AR686W with DD-WRT at $20. Surprised how many routers only support 100 and dont support 1000 in 2013.

Anyways....

Also, I doubt you have "gigabit internet". You problably have a gigabit NIC.

Trying limiting his NIC to 100 and see if that helps. Any network software is IMO crap.

Is the modem in bridge mode?
