Sorry if this is the wrong place for this question, but on the CompTIA website it tells me: "Both CompTIA A+ 220-701 and CompTIA A+220-702 are required for certification." Yet I'm finding a whole bunch of books to study the Exams 220-801 & 220-802, and the 220-701 and 220-702 books it recommends are 2009 edition.

Any insight on what I should be studying from? Senior in HS and plan on going down the IT path next year after graduation, want to be prepared! Don't know if it will be useless to study now since I won't be taking the test until the end of the year, or early 2014, if it even takes that long to study!

Thank you!

801 and 802 are the replacements for the 701 - 702. They also focus on different areas (kind of) I would pick up a book for the 801 - 802 to study and also check out www.freeaplus.com The professor messer videos here are one of the highest recommended study tools for the A+ Cert exams.

I'd even say watch the videos first, IF you have a firm understanding of the material in the videos you may not even need a book (althou I'd still recommend it).

Another good site that has free practice exams and a great forum related strictly to certification questions is techexams.net

Here is a break down of what the previous and replacement exams cover.

Thanks for your quick reply! Would you say it would be silly to purchase the book and begin self studying (taking notes, etc...) if I don't plan on taking the exam for a while? How long would you say I should give my self to study? I don't really know how long it should take, since the book I've been looking at is over 1100 pages long. (I know that's an extremely broad question, since people learn at different rates.) Also, would it be foolish to study now if I don't plan on getting a job in the field until this time next summer?

I wouldn't say it would be foolish at all. Also the book will always be a good reference depending on what branch of IT you decide to go in to. The A+ Cert is the most basic certification, however it's also one of the broadest as far as material you need to learn. It literally skips all over the place from hardware, software, networking, security, troubleshooting etc.

As far as how long would it take it truly depends on the individual. When I took my A+ I studied for about 2 months before trying the test/s. But I also had already been in the field for about 2 years as a desktop support technician and a assistant to the Network admin. Being in the field is what has helped me more then anything... The experience and knowledge ive gained from working with other IT pro's was worth more in 6 months then all of my 4 years at school. But again it's really just the person type.. I'm more of a hands on learner.

If you can try to get a part time job in a computer shop or something of that nature. Especially if you're already good at building pc's. The more exposure you can get to different parts of the field the better. Best of luck on your tests!

*edit* Also.. A good way to see if your ready or not is taking the practice exams. There are some available on techexams.net as well as CompTia's website. Don't be discouraged if you don't do good right away! They are not that easy.. Even for people that know their stuff. There are a lot of terms and stuff you'll have to cram.
