Hello all, I'm investing in a new laptop strictly for gaming. Would you recommend windows 7 or 8? I like the idea of 7 because there are quite a few games I've missed out on playing over the past couple years because I've had a mac. Come to think of it, some of the games were made to run on XP. Thats why i'm leaning towards 7. However any new games I'd get would run on 8.. I think? Or is 7 around to stay for the gaming world? Suggestion or thoughts?

Windows 8 is great, it's very stable and solid, and feels much lighter than 7.

Start8 or Classic Shell will take care of the metro interface, and bring back the normal Start Menu/Icon. There's very little reason to get 7.

I have games from XP that run well on Windows 8 with no issues too. I also have a tons of software too, no issues with any. Windows 8 is probably the easiest and most problem free operating system I've used to date.
The biggest difference between Windows 7 and Windows 8 is the user interface. Windows 7 has the best interface for desktop and laptop systems, and also is the most compatible with games. Windows 8 will work fine with most titles, but there are a few older games it might have problems with eg. Fallout 3. Windows 8 also has the horrible Modern UI which isn't really good unless you're using a touchscreen. There are third party apps like Start8 that restore the Windows 7 interface to Windows 8 and let you ignore the Modern UI, and that is what I would suggest you use if you do go with Windows 8.

Unfortunately Microsoft seems intent on shoving Windows 8 down our throats whether we like it or not, so you may be hard pressed to find a new laptop that comes with Windows 7. You can downgrade (or upgrade based on your opinion of the Windows 8 UI) to Windows 7 after you buy the laptop, assuming you have a Windows 7 install disk and key lying around.

Most people on here have a thing about windows 8. They also all believe that they're having windows 8 forced upon them, even though almost all of us are running custom rigs. I find it kind of silly, because about five minutes of customization and it looks and works JUST like windows 7, but with faster searching in the start menu, more stability, and better management of resources.

I personally installed windows 8 a while back, so that I could use my windows 7 partition with SoftxPand. I now use windows 8 for gaming except when using two workstations under windows 7, and like it just fine; within just a couple minutes, I adapted to the few things I didn't change.

Personally, I like Win8, especially on a multi-monitor setup.

On boot, Metro opens on the primary (left) monitor, and regular desktop opens on the secondary (right).
A single click on the desktop, and the Metro side disappears.
On a single monitor system, one tap of the Windows key gets you the same thing.

Performancewise, I see little real difference. *Maybe* 8 is a hair faster, but hard to quantify without extensive benchtests, which I'm not going to do at home.

Windows 8 is equally stable. That being said, it's really up to the OP. Do a little bit of research and figure out which one you want; the differences between them, once they're both configured, are very slight.
