[Ubuntu]Installing Ubuntu and WNA1100 and some other things

hey all,
I am posting after a long time.
I am planning to install Ubuntu.
First, I was completely against it due to the lack of compatibility.
But then I realised what do I do on the computer ? I browse the net and play games. Sometimes printing, media, lots of downloading stuff. But in the end there is counterpart for everything on Ubuntu. And as a matter of fact the game I usually play rather the only one I play now atleast, Blacklight Retribution(BTW it is awesome) is works under ubuntu (12.10 atleast) with wine(you must have heard of it...).
But then I realised there are other things also. So I have the following issues-
1)Will the wifi dongle - Netgear WNA1100 work under ubuntu ? does anybody know ?
2)Will my printer HP Deskjet 2050 J510a work under Ubuntu ? I have searched for drivers on the site but the ones available are ancient (date 2007) so I doubt if they might work.
3)Like installing windows if you don't format the partition , a windows.old is present with the former c drive. Is there anything like this with Ubuntu ? Because I am planning it to keep the only os for a while so I don't wanna lose the tons of file.
4)Is there anyway I can add it to my current windows 8 installation ? I know there are tons of guides but what I want is windows 7 bootloader so I don't have to reboot twice.
Also I have a problem with shrinking. I have a single partition on a 250gig hdd I can't do it more than 3020 mb which is ofc less. Is there any way I can shrink it more by moving the data to other sectors of the disk so as to keep it in a sequential way ?
Or create 3 partitions, by transferring my main data to a 100gig parition.
100 gig for windows and 50 for ubuntu ?(I have 70 gigs free on c)
5)Is it true that games have better ping on linux ? Is it even theoretically true ?

Your wifi dongle should work out of the box under most linux distrobutions. Hardware information here:
http://wikidevi.com/wiki/Netgear_WNA1100
It has both open source drivers and firmware.

Yes! Luckily you have a HP printer, they have excellent support under linux with the "HPLIP" driver. Practically every HP printer ever made is supported. Supported features for your printer are here:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/deskjet_aio/deskjet_2050_j510_series.html

You should always backup your files just in case. When you install ubuntu you generally are presented with two options.
1) shrink windows partition and install (dual boot)
2) use entire drive (these will format your entire drive and consequently delete all files.)

If you want to dual boot, it is very easy. But the instructions will be dependent on your unspecific installation. Generally after you install ubuntu its bootloader, GRUB, will replace the windows bootloader and it will add a selection for windows 8 to the boot list. You will then be able to select Ubuntu or Windows when you boot.

Choosing the latter is the preferred method...

Linux generally has a less complicated network stack and less buffers, but in the real world you are unlikely to see much difference.

would following this guide -http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/05/17/how-to-dual-boot-ubuntu-12-04-and-windows-7/ would be enough ? and I have executed bcdedit bootmenupolicy legacy or whatever it was.

That guide will work, but generally not the preferred method of installation.

Recommend reading offical guide (works for most linux's):
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot#Install_Ubuntu_after_Windows

1.) if using windows 8, you must disable windows 'fast/quick boot'
2.) install ubuntu after windows will replace the windows bootloader with GRUB bootloader.
3.) ubuntu automatically adds windows to GRUB menu list.

This link has more information for installing windows 8 + ubuntu
