I'm looking into getting a new smartphone for myself, probably going to be getting one of the new Android devices. Unfortunately, the one I am looking at is too expensive for me at the moment. As far as I know, you get a discount on the price of your phone if you upgrade once your contract expires. Is this true? If so, how much? Sorry if these are dumb questions, but I am quite new to this.

Generally, they will give you a massive discount on your phone when you renew or sign up for a 2-year contract, if you already have a contract, you will probably qualify for a credit every 2 years. If you are looking for a new contract, they will also give you a discount credit on a phone when signing up for 2 years.
