Hi All

I have a 12 metre cable going from our outdoor directional antenna(booster) to our 3G dongle modem
on our computer. If I make the cable from our outdoor directional antenna(booster) 5 metres long only,
will our internet signal get stronger?

Does anyone have practical experience with regard to this?

My set up is this;

I got a Comba Outdoor Directional Antenna with a 10M cable NType male to SMA Male cable connected to a 2metre USB extension cable going to a
3G-USB-Mate Universal Modem Mate Coupling which is plugged into our modem which is plugged into our computer

Best regards Yanni

What is the signal loss per meter of your cable ? They are usually rated in dB/meter. If your cable has a high loss (like >0.5 dB/meter) then shortening to 2m will result in a 4dB gain in signal strength. But if your cable is one of those ultra-low loss varieties (<0.05 dB/meter), then shortening it to 2m doesn't result in much of a gain in signal strength.

You can usually find this information from the manufacturer or...

Measure the signal level as close to the booster (source) as you can with a short cable if you have one, then compare that to with the cable inserted to find out how much of a loss you have. If you don't see much of a difference, then shortening your cable isn't going to give you much more signal strength.

Thanks for the reply McNumpty23!

Just correction, our wireless set up is like this;
We got a Comba Outdoor Directional Antenna(booster) with a
10M cable NType male to SMA Male cable connected to a 3G-USB-Mate Universal Modem Mate Coupling which is connected to a 3G Dongle Modem which is connected to a 2metre USB extension cable which is plugged into our computer.

I'm guessing that your directional antenna is pointed at the nearest tower. Are you having weak signal issues or intermittent drop-outs ?

Thanks Maxx_Power for your help.

We had a weak signal so we got a Comba Outdoor Directional Antenna(booster) and our signal has strengthened. We are in a metalwork workshop, with a metal roof so our 3G dongle modem had a lot of signal interference. We put our Comba Outdoor Directional Antenna outside on the roof to get it away from metal interference. We ordered at 10metre(NType male to SMA Male) to connect to our 3G Dongle Modem via a 3G-USB-Mate Universal Modem Mate Coupling. We only needed a 2metre(NType male to SMA Male) cable to connect to our 2 metre USB Extension Cable. If we shorten our 10metre(NType male to SMA Male) cable to a 2 metre(NType male to SMA Male) cable, will it make a big difference?

I am aiming the Outdoor Directional Antenna to my local exchange(Tower) which is about 1 kilometre(less than a mile) from where we are. I would like my 'Internet Access' Icon on the bottom right hand corner of my computer screen to 'Excellent' signal strength at the moment it says 'good' signal strength?
