so here's my question.. sorry if its lame

i have a cable modem internet connection. my modem is connected through a coaxial cable to a main line..
my friend living nearby (~2 km) also have internet connection from the same provider and is connected to the same line to which i'm connected.

so is there any way i can share my files with him through this line ?
i read somewhere that the modems connected to the same main line as above cannot communicate to each other or so ..

so any solution ?

Not unless you have a public IP. But why not just walk over to his house or have him walk over to yours? It's only 2 kilometers.

Set him up with an account on your computer mapped to the public IP and have him ssh into it and download it. Or you can set up a httpd and put it somewhere.

if i use this method still data goes through the cable modem termination system right ?
i want it direct from my pc to his pc along the line.
otherwise speed will be capped and my data usage will increase :pfff:

It will be capped by your bandwidth and his. It won't be super fast like you would have with a drive directly plugged into your computer.

You can't communicate with other modems with CMTS so that won't work. But if he is only 1.2 kilometers, just walk there or have him walk to you.

Unless the file(s) that you want to send him is really large, it shouldn't take too long to download.
