I recently upgraded my gpu to a asus nvidia geforce gtx 660 DirectCu II OC 2GB

I played battlefield 3 on ultra and get 60+ fps. but at some point, the fps goes down to 20 or so.
Why is it doing that? I never had that problem with my other gpu..

Specs:
Amd fx-8120
asus m5a 78L motherboard
asus nvidia geforce gtx 660 DCUII 2gb OC
550 PSU
cooler master haf 912
8 gb ram
1 TB HDD

it should play ultra just fine, assuming hes playing at 1920x1080 or less (it might do alright at higher resolutions, but i cant speak to that because ive never tried). I played with that graphics card for a long time on ultra and got above 40fps on ultra

Yea I don't understand why they do that. Sell this card at a higher price with lower bit bus. AMD's highest is 384 im pretty sure and Nvidia like 256 right? (single gpu). AMD higher bit bus but AMD socket mobos only have pcie 2.1 no pcie 3.0

It could be the PSU, it seems the video card is losing power after a while and not providing adequate watts.
What brand is your 550 watt PSU? I'd be a bit wary about such a volume, I'd rather go for at least 650 watts

M5A78L-M/USB3, if that is your motherboard does not have PCIe 3.0 whereas your video card relies on it for bandwidth and performance.

I would love to build an 8 core PC but that no pcie 3.0 with 8 core is just stupid.

The 660 has the boost technolgy which will adjust the clock

'Push the breathtaking performance of the GeForce GTX graphics cards to new levels with NVIDIA GPU Boost. This technology dynamically maximizes clock speeds to bring out the best performance in every game.'
http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/GTX660DC22GD5/

Try the guide here to turn off the boost and see if it stops the frame rate drops

Splendid

650w for a GTX 660? Come on that's insane... Google it before giving out misleading info because if it was psu related he'd be getting restarts. And the 660 relying on PCIe 3 bandwidth? The Titan/7990 don't even take advantage of it other than a few extra points in benchmarks.

The drops in fps are probably from either high AA or in-game physics (HAVOK) which is performed on the CPU and the 8150 is lacking in instructions.

I'd disable MSAA and post processing and enable FXAA in nVidia control panel and max out power control settings
