Here's one I've been working on for two days.
PC1 (Win 7 pro)
PC2 (win 7 pro)
I've setup Homegroup on PC1, got PC2 to join, setup shared files on 1, setup permissions, etc.
PC2 cannot access the Homegroup, wired or wireless. Then after a while PC1 says theres no one on Homegroup. I have been all over the net and no one has a solution for this.
DARE YOU!
PC 1 is my tower, Pc2 is my late model HP laptop. Realtek Gbps wired, Motorolla SBG6580 Surfboard router for wireless.

Ditch the Home Group and use normal network sharing...

Change the network type to work

Make shares and set permissions, make sure they are both in the same workgroup..

then use either UNC or IP address to link. \\PC1\sharename and \\PC2\othersharename

Same Workgroup (Computer right click Properties, Click Change Settings in Computer name... area, click Change button, makeup a workgroup name, click OK 2x and restart, do the same on the other system)

Network Sharing / Advanced sharing settings: make sure Home or Work area's File and printer sharing is on for both systems... You can turn it all on for now, then restrict it after it is working...

Now you need to open a share on your computer. Pick the Downloads folder, right click Properties, Sharing tab, click Share button, add Users "Everyone" then click Share and back out...

Now in the Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) address bar type in your computer name like this \\computername and press enter. IF you did it right you should see the folder you just shared. Now try the \\computername from the other computer...

Just do that to any folders you want to share and you are golden. Just pull back on the security until you cannot access the share then open the last step back up...

Start... (button) Right side, Computer... right click, select Properties...

Same Workgroup (Computer right click Properties, Click Change Settings in Computer name... area, click Change button, makeup a workgroup name, click OK 2x and restart, do the same on the other system)

;-)

No one seems to have a solution for it, the closest I got was an old XP problem.
I have now tried CAT6 cable, ping from PC1 works, ping from PC 2 does not.
Network firewall disabled on both. Nothing

I would like to continue to help with this but is will get increasingly difficult.

Before we even start down this road, can you do a complete check of the laptop for virus' and malware?

run offline (safe mode) aggressive scans using Moosoft The Cleaner, Malwarebytes, Stinger and such and see if they come up with anything.
(this is what I end up doing to ALL pc's that come into my office... ALL PC's have some form of Malware...

I've done that, no problems. registry looks good. PC2 can see the shared file, but when I try to access, "PC1 not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network Resource" I have tried everything to get the permission, but nothing on the Inet except old XP advice.

yeah, I tried that to. So now I have a crossover cable, what the hell do I do next? The PC's still don't see each other.

Crossover cables are not for PC's... They are for Switch to switch connections...

Can you ping the other computers in the house? in each direction? PC1 > ping > PC2 and PC2 > ping > PC1?

The only other thing would be your security. Disable it on both machines for now and retry.

You have also verified that both computers are seeing the network as a "Work" network?

Sharing is enabled?

OK, finally found Windows Firewall with Advanced Security on local computer properties, set private profile to allow, and now they can ping each other, but PC2 (laptop) still has no access permission to access PC1, I've done everything now. You know what sucks? I just finished 1st semester Cisco!

both PCs see the shares file, but 2 says it needs permission form 1 I just saw a blurb on Win 7 Home Premium sucking, and that is exactly what PC2 WAS before I upgraded to Pro, could that be the problem?

I just noticed something on PC2, no matter how I change it, it keeps renaming itself a homegroup. 'This Computer is part of a homegroup', no matter what else I set it to. This makes me think the Pro upgrade isn't all it's cracked up to be.
