Need assistance with Abit Motherboard issue

My old Abit IT7 MB went out. Is I possible to get a new MB (updated model) and reinstall the original HD so I can preserve my files? I am unable to purchase or locate this MB since it is old.

Please keep in mind my WIN XP Pro was not upgraded to SP3. I say this because MS will not allow a older version of WIN XP to overwrite a newer "SP3 version"

If the HDD is a SATA one, you can try setting SATA to IDE in BIOS on the new system and see if it does boot from it.
If it doesn't, you would install Windows on a different partition/new HDD and access the old partition/HDD for getting the needed files.

The HHD is an IDE. I have installed it via USB but am unable to view files. I would try to "repair" but for MS policies. Thanks for your assistance.
