Would like a critique of my current build found here:
http://pcpartpicker.com/user/nicholls63/saved/1B6f

Approximate Purchase Date: this week

Budget Range: $900-1000 - After Rebates/Shipping

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, Matlab or other numerical programs

Do you need to buy OS: Yes

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Doesn't matter

Location: Toronto, Canada

Parts Preferences: none

Overclocking: Would like to in the future

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: 1600x1200 (I think; I have a 24 inch SAMSUNG LED)

Additional Comments: I'm not a huge gamer as I do not have time. Games would mostly be single player games such as Skyrim, and maybe some CS. Might also use computer for simulations, therefore good all around performance is what I am looking for. This is also my first build ever, so I am a noob.

Some specific questions: Is the Pro3 motherboard sufficient? A cheaper PSU would be nice, pretty sure the TX650 is 100 bucks in Canada :S. Probably could go with less wattage?

What do you guys think?
Thanks in advance.

Looks ok to me. You could probably get away with a smaller (wattage-wise) PSU. I'd check out ~500W models by Seasonic/Corsair, personally.

Shouldn't be anything wrong with the motherboard, either. The only quibbles I have are that you might as well grab a case with front-panel USB 3.0 support if you're building a $1,000 computer, and you probably want to supplement your SSD with an HDD of some sort for mass storage.

Enthusiasts might question your choice of GPU given your (relatively large) budget, but since you're not an avid gamer, I can't criticize your choice; you'll probably get more day-to-day mileage out of the SSD than you would out of a beefier GPU.

In here you would have an i7 plus a better GPU. Only difference though is you can't OC.

As you're not a big gamer, overclocking's not really a requirement; the Xeon is pretty good value and a solid performer. I strayed over the budget by adding some HDD storage though, you may need it ;)

I agree, I am going to drop overclocking in the interest of cost, might try and bump my machine down to 800-900 dollars. Therefore to save money I think I'll move down to the i5-3470. What would be a good motherboard to go with this?

If you don't mind a Micro ATX MoBo, you can probably find something cheaper too. Just make sure it has the H77 chipset.

OK here is my updated build:

http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/nicholls63/saved/1Bhz

I put in the 3470 with an ASRock H77 PRO4/MVP. Changed the SSD to one with slightly higher performance. Upgraded graphics card to a GTX660 2GB. Also put in a slightly better case which I can purchase in person.

Does everything check out? Remember I am a noob and have never done this before so I can't foresee compatibility issues etc.
