I want to buy an external Hdd for backup and archives so that I can retrieve data whenever my internal drive fails and also additional storage as my present on is about to full. I will transfer all data to this one and keep it safe and then delete movies or other data from internal which I don't need on daily basis to free up space. I found canvio of toshiba to be cheap then seagate or wd but reviews are mixed . So which of these three are most durable and reliable for backup. safety of data is most important rather than additional software or other benefits. I will use usb 2.0

You said you were going to transfer data to the drive and then delete it off your primary. That makes the external drive primary storage and not a backup. IE - You dont have a backup for this data.

If you cant afford to loose the data then I suggest you at least make a backup to dvd (with verification) with multiple backup preferred.

As for which drive to get. I would go with a WD that has a 3.5" drive inside it. As always check reviews. Seagate would be next on my list. Its a short list, thats it. btw, Toshiba doesn't make hdd's, they pay someone else to make them for them. Canvio's have rather poor reviews iirc.
