Troubleshoot Graphics card [possibly motherboard?]

Hi Everyone,

I turned on my pc last night and I suspect my graphics card may be dead. I power on the PC, and nothing at all is output to the monitors.

  • ■ both monitors continue to display the bouncing "cable not connected" box.
    ■ The fan on the graphics card is spinning at what sounds like its maximum speed.
    ■ The system does not seem to be responsive to front panel buttons (reset, power) whatsoever.
    ■ Same symptoms on startup with no monitors connected.
    ■ Same with monitors plugged into different graphics card ports
Only one time (i think within the first few power cycles of discovering problem), did the GC fan not spin at full speed. Still no monitor output, though.
    ■ I tried pulling out the GC and visually inspecting it, nothing immediately apparent. Not significantly dusty, either. (blew it out with canned air)
    ■ I tried putting it in the MB's other PCIe port, same behavior
    ■ MB does not have any monitor outputs

Graphics card: ATI 100-505606 FirePro V4800 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Workstation Video Card
P/N 102CO200322 000001

Motherboard: ASUS M4A87TD EVO AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Anything I can try or test out?

Thanks,
Brian

I have never overclocked the card, just factory standard settings. I do not have another machine to try it in.

I heard that I should try to let the machine boot, and see of the caps lock, num lock, scroll lock, etc keyboard buttons are responsive.

Update

So, I reported this as a graphics card issue because I noticed the GPU fan was running at full speed. Although, I have some new info that may be of some help to you champions out there. If appropriate, I will repost this topic in a general help section? Or just link to it? I'm new here, not sure what's best.

The day after I noticed the issue, I came back to a seemingly self-healed computer. Seemed fine (for a day). The same problem has now returned. My computer is configured to go to sleep after some period of inactivity. I press a key, and it wakes back up. I woke it up after it being asleep (thinking back, maybe had to use front panel power button), and it brought me to the "Windows did not shut down properly. How about Safe Mode?" screen. It seemed to come back to life ok that once.

Now, original problem. Power on and GPU fan cranking full bore. Tower front panel power indicator light flashes @ ~ 1Hz. Cycle power switch on PSU (recall machine is non-responsive to tower front panel buttons in this state). Same issue. Strangely, front panel indicator light doesn't flash after cycling power first time (i believe).

Keyboard in non-responsive to caps lock, num lock, etc.

Are there any tests I can do? I have a laptop running Windows 8, but that's it. I may be able to get a hold of a tower with a 7-year old Asus MB (not sure if has PCIe slot for testing this graphics card)
