I ordered a 3TB SATAIII 7200 64mb cache hard drive. I am trying to bring my motherboard as up to snuff as possible to get the speed increases.

I know this HD can not return SATAIII speeds except in burst do to the read speed. I expect it to negotiate a SATA II speed anyway.

My current MB may be GA-P55M-UD2 or GA-P55-UD2 I left the model number on the table at home. As it sits it will run SATA I, I am trying to upgrade drivers to allow it to run SATA II. Gigabyte webpage is not helpful in documenting the details of doing it. There are four files listed in the SATA RAID/AHCI section to download on the MB website. Does the order matter? Do I need them all?

-Intel SATA Preinstall driver
(For AHCI / RAID Mode)
Note: Press F6 during Windows setup to read from floppy.
-Intel® Rapid Storage Technology
-GIGABYTE SATA2 Driver
-GIGABYTE SATA2 Preinstall driver
(For AHCI / RAID Mode)
Note: Press F6 during Windows setup to read from floppy.

Any tips or tricks to this? I have never run SATA, so hoping to be blown away with the speed increase.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.
Dan

1) Do you need reinstall the OS?
2) What OS do you use? Win7/8 or winxp.
3) Will you set the raid?

If you use the win7/8 you do need install those at all if you don't use SSD or set the RAID, even you need reinstall the win7/8 into the new drive. But you maybe need the new BIOS. Check the gigabyte website to see the MB need the new BIOS to recognize the 3TB HDD or not.

If you need reinstall the winxp, then you need the sata driver ( for F6 install sata driver) because winxp does not come with the driver, otherwise you can't install the winxp into the sata HDD, also Check the BIOS too.

I use win7 64 bit. I was thinking about reinstalling everything fresh to clear the bloat ware. I could clone though if there is a reason to. Things I am not sure about is moving all my iCrap backups to the new drive? I am guessing when I add back in the other drive none of the programs will be recognized by the new windows.

What do you mean will I set the raid? Is this about having 2 drives duplicated?

I installed the latest BIOS last night, F11. Sounds like because I am using the latest BIOS and I am using win7 I am good.
