I have a HP Pavilion P6204Y Special Edition running Windows 7 Home Premium x64 that has been having issues with the USB ports for the last few weeks.
I am using a USB keyboard and mouse, which both power up/light up as soon as the computer is turned on. They work fine when I enter the BIOS, but as soon as Windows starts loading, the keyboard and mouse turn off and stop working. USB memory stick and any other USB devices totally don't show up at all either, the computer doesn't even notice that a new device has been plugged in.
I attached a PS-2 keyboard and it worked fine and I was able to go to the device manager. I checked and all the USB drivers were installed and reported that everything was working correctly. I uninstalled them all and then restarted the computer, same thing happened again.

I used the PS-2 keyboard again and ran a system restore to 5 days again (May 10). After the restore was done and the PC restarted all the USB devices worked again.
*(This is the second time this has happened now. The same thing happened on the 8th of May and I fixed it with the same procedure.)

I would go here: http://h20331.www2.hp.com/Hpsub/us/en/down-library.html and download the HP System Software Manager. It will scan your computer and update your drivers, BIOS, etc. If that doesn't solve the problem then I would backup all your data to another drive and do a clean install of Windows 7.

Although these may not necessarily be the fastest solutions, they should get the job done.

Good luck and let us know if it works!

I ran the System Software Manager but it did not find any updates for the system. I may have found the culprit though. I think the problems is with the Windows 7 SP1 update. Every time I ran a system restore it uninstalled a few updates, and then I guess they would reinstall and then I suddenly had the issue again. I now installed the updates one at a time to see if any were causing the problem. The last update was the service pack, and after installing it suddenly the USB shut down again. I guess I will just do another restore and keep Windows from installing the service pack.

As I suspected the issue was with the Windows 7 SP1 update. I restored the system to the restore point created immediately before the update, and viola, the USB devices worked again. I have selected 'hide' to prevent windows from installing the update again, and hopefully everything is good to go. I would consider the issue resolved.
