OK. I got a CAT6 cable connecting my 2 pc's. I've changed IP's to .1 and .2 on each, same MAC's.
I ping from PC 1, no problem
I ping from PC 2, timed out
Network firewall disabled on both
PC 2 is a late model HP laptop.
PC 1 has shared folder I want PC 2 to access. Tried Homegroup, Workgroup, nothing.
IPv6 enabled on both.
I am about to go back to the usb transfer method, and never buy HP again. (I just dumped off a printer of theirs-another story)
Any ideas out there?

Do you have your CAT6 configured to "crossover"? I'm guessing a basic ethernet cable won't do the trick in this situation. :/

I found this in one of the sticky threads in the networking section.

Can I hook up two computers that both have Ethernet adapters without using a hub, switch, or router?
Yes. You'll need to use a special cable called a "crossover" cable, however, or the two systems won't be able to communicate.
The "crossover" cable looks like a normal UTP Ethernet cable, but it's wired differently, swapping the Receive and Transmit Ethernet signal pairs.
Be sure to Enable File and Printer sharing in both systems' Network Control panels and we suggest using the NetBEUI protocol to get you up and running quickly.

Assuming you are cabled correctly, you can also try this.

On PC1, open the network control panel by clicking “Start,” clicking “Control Panel” and clicking “Network and Internet.” Click the “Windows Firewall” icon to open the firewall configuration window, click the “Advanced” tab and click the “Settings” button in the ICMP section. Check the “Allow Incoming Echo Request” box.

Ihave tried Homegroup, Workgroup wirelessly, and PC 2 (laptop) will not see anything, so I got rid of Home and Workgroups. Just trying to get PC 2 to access files being shared on PC 1.
Both are pinging each other, but PC 2 refuses to see shared files for some reason

There are settings in Network and Sharing Center somewhere that you can set to share files on a network. I believe both computers have to be in the same workgroup. The folder has to be shared as well.

Anyone know what/where ICMP is in Win 7?
I can click 'Start>Control Panel>Network and Sharing Center>Windows Firewall>>Advanced Settings> Nothing says settings OR ICMP, nothing says Allow
