When HDD is plugged in, RAID0 is not recognized / won't boot

Hello,

I think I have a configuration issue, but I can't pin it down.

If my 3.5" data drive is plugged in during boot, my SSD RAID0 will not be seen by BIOS and computer will not boot ('Please insert boot drive and reboot'). I can (hot-swap enabled) plug the 3.5" HDD in after boot and everything is cherry. (HDD is blank and formated)

EDIT: For clarification, I can boot to my 2xSSD RAID0. After boot, I can plug the SATA 3.5" HDD in and it works.

Solution
after reading through these posts again, this scenario makes no sense... with all drives connected, if your BIOS does not recognize and see them all, there's an incompatibility with the drives/motherboard if the BIOS is up to date, OR there's a cable/power issue to the drives the mb does not see

which is it?

Correct. the 2tb hdd is just for data storage

that was my first thought. When I do this, the RAID is not seen by the BIOS, only the 3.5". The BIOS does not show the SSDs under the SATA port config list

not to rain on your parade, but this is the ultimate reason why Not to have this kind of setup

does your motherboard have 2 sata controllers? what if you use a different port to connect the hdd to?

and what do you have the controller set to - AHCI or IDE?

Don't worry haha I have no parade to rain on, just here to learn. This is my first delve into RAID. I believe my motherboard has only one SATA controller (I think I see where this is going). Tried different ports. I have it set to [strike]AHCI[/strike] RAID.

Oops sorry, I think I answered incorrectly, it is set to RAID. I'll fix my above answer.

The computer boots no prob to RAID and will recognize the 3.5" hdd once it is booted

Are the hdd's sata2's and the ssd a sata3?

I think whats happeneing is the ssd is being detected first and setting the signalling to sata3 speeds and this causes the sata2 hdd's to not be able to communicate.

Try moving the ssd to a higher numbered port than the hard drives.

Interesting point, however, if I boot with the 3.5" HDD plugged in, BIOS does not see the RAID, it sees the 3.5" HDD. My SSD RAID is plugged into into SATA III ports 0 and 1. My 3.5" HDD is plugged into SATA II port 3. (I'm not sure why I don't have it in one of the other 2 SATA III ports.... but that is how it is currently)

So when you remove it, the boot priority shows the raid and when you add it back in the boot priority doesn't show the raid at all. That's very odd.

If it were me, I would probably check for a bios update. You may have already, but check the documentation for your motherboard and the support forums on the company site to see if others have had the issue.

Does the hdd have any boot stuff on it? Anything that might be hidden? Can you move the data off of it, remove the partition (iirc, make an extended partition?), format it, and see what happens?

exactly. :??:

[strike]Good call on the forums[/strike](nothing found), [strike]and I'll double check for BIOS update[/strike](bios is up to date).

HDD is formatted, single partition- using separate Win7x64 machine and blank (verified).

no jumpers (sata doesn't use jumpers I thought).

if there is such a configuration, i have not found it

bios is up to date

I know you said it's set to raid, but have you checked it after installing the hdd? Is it possibly switching it to ide or ahci when you do that?

Could there be a firmware update for the hdd?

Have you tried removing the partition from the hdd and try it that way?

Just spitballing here as it's got me stumped.
