Slow LAN speeds on 1gpbs network

I'm trying to transfer large files to my new WD Live TV Hub, which has a 1tb hard drive and is connected through a wired connection to a 1gbps Asus RT-N56U. My PC's that I'm xfering from are both windows 7 and have 1gbps on-board nics.

My problem is that I'm maxing out at 12 mb/sec when transferring files. I seem to be able to get a combined speed that is higher than that when I transfer from two PC's at the same time, but not quite 24 mb/sec.

My network cabling is ran through my ceiling, and I'm pretty sure I used Cat6, but even if it is Cat 5 shouldn't it be faster than that?

Sounds like the box is limiting the speed more than the network. Can you transfer from pc to pc with fast speeds? If so, then the box is just designed badly, whether it's a hardware or software issue.

Your wiring cannot exceed 100 meters in length from end to end, and all 4 pairs need to be properly connected. Assuming you have that, cat5, cat5e and cat6 are all theoretically capable of 1000BASE-T.
Check your switch, router and endpoint configs. In the OS, Jumbo Frames need to be enabled, with the highest possible MTU rate (usually 9KB MTU). Speed and Duplex need to be auto-negotiated on all devices, and If you have a switch in the middle, it will also need to be similarly configured.

I feel a little silly as this is a really obvious test that I should have done, thanks.

When I xfer from pc to pc i get around 80-85 mb/sec, so yes, it must be the WD TV box.

Having said that, is 80-85 mb/sec a reasonable transfer rate, or should I be looking to tweak things to get even better speeds? I used a 1.5gb file to test with, so I think it was a fair test.
