Hi, I'm building a new rig which is going to have a SATA 3 motherboard (Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3).

As my main hard drive, I'm buying a new SATA 3 SSD (for windows and booting programs etc). For general storage, I'm using my older maxtor diamondback 10's (x2), one of which is SATA 1 and the other is SATA 2 (just to confuse matters!)

So I've got 3 levels of SATA operating in one system and my questions are:

1) firstly, will the slower devices slow down the faster one's in the system?
and
2) What, regarding AHCI, is the best configuration to put these devices in, for best system performance?

Thanks!

You are really worrying about nothing. Hdds will not affect each other and ahci is just a mode instead of using ide or raid modes. There is no configuring. The sata connection is just the theoretical max, all 7200rpm hdds are relatively the same performance.
