Im planning on getting this card: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=19269 , The Gigabyte Radeon HD7970 OC edition for $399, but my friend has offered to sell me his MSI Lightning xtreme 3gb edition card for $220, which card would you recommend i get?

The 7970 is roughly 30% more performance than the GTX 580. You would be better off buying a new HD 7870 Myst Edition for the same price as what your friend is offering the GTX 580 and it would provide slightly better performance than the GTX 580. It is up to you as to whether you want to spend the extra $180 for the increased performance.
