I have a 3 year old AMD build with the following config:

Processor: AMD Phenom x2 555BE (unlocked to quad mode) with stock cooler
Motherboard: Asus M4A785TD-V-EVO
RAM: Gskill Ripjaws 2X2GB
HDD: WD Black 500gb + Samsung 80 gb (Sata)
DVD: HP DW1260
PSU: Corsair VX550 550w
GFX: onboard radeon 4200
Cabinet Cooler Master Elite 335
Monitor: Dell S2240L connected via onboard vga
with no other card or accessories installed.

I have been facing this problem almost since last 1 year and it happens so randomly that sometimes I forget about it altogether. I can easily multitask on this system, play games without any hangup. But when it wants to hang it hangs with just a web browser running or a word document open. And it hangs with the screen freezing with reddish or greenish small lines or it just hangs with a constant loud beep from the motherboard speaker. During past 5 days it hanged twice just 5 mins after booting the system.
I have done all the below steps:

- Checked the ram sticks with memtest (7 pass)
- Disable the onboard video card and tested with my old nvidia 6600GT
- Tried switching the ram slots
- disabling onboard gfx memory
- I have thoroughly cleaned the cabinet inside with vacuum cleaner.
- Removed and reconnected all the cables.
- Switched the processor back to default dual core mode.

But I am really fed up by this problem and i just cant trust my system for any critical task now. please help !!!

Wasn't your cpu overheating? What are your temps?

My CPU Temps are always around 44-56 *C. Occasionally on full load it goes to 60+ max to 65 *C. But with just a word document open or a browser with 3 tabs shouldn't overheat it?

I have now upgraded the cooler to Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, But still the idle temperatures are around 44 and goes to 54-55 under full load when testing the cpu with prime 95 (All 4 cores). Again today it hanged with no sound at all. Someone please help ?

Maybe one of your unlocked cores is defecT? idk man i never worked with unlocked cores 'cause they are disabled for a reason.

Just a possibility, but you might want to lock your processor down to it's original configuration of 2 cores: Sounds like one of the previously locked-out cores was actually 'bad', which is why it became a dual-core CPU.
The other prossibility is that the on-board video is dieing. That would cause the weird screen display. Can you borrow a discrete video card for a few days? If so, disable on-board video in the BIOS, install the card and run it hard for 24 hrs. or longer. If no problems, then the culprit was the onboard video.
One last thing: It might be your PSU. Do you have any program monitoring your system that also shows you the voltages the PSU is providing? Corsair sells really good power supplies, but regardless they can and do go bad. I am still using Corsair in my main rig, but had some real problems with one of my first Corsairs.
Please post back with your findings.

I did try with the default 2 cores, still hanged, I tried with my old nvidia 6600 GT with 128 mb vram, Still it hanged. And the hanging pattern is highly random, sometimes it hangs with red green lines,or it just hangs with no sound or pattern on screen or it hangs with just beep from the mboard. Regarding the PSU Voltages I am attaching a screenshot from speedfan 4.49 software.

Sorry, I didn't recall all the steps you had taken when I posted last time.
Well, I am looking at the screenshots and the SpeedFan worries me a lot. It shows 6.85V on the +5 rail which is WAY out of spec, but then in the right panel shows 5.07 which is good. The CPUID shot shows everything in compliance. IF the speedfan readings are correct, you have problem on the +5v rail, problem enough that it could very well fry hardware. It might be worth trying another PSU and see what happens; if that 5V rail is acting up intermittently it may explain the problem. Don't know if there is a Best Buy near you, but if so I would go buy a new PSU and try that for a week or so; if it doesn't solve the problem then take it back. (Or borrow one from a friend).
It is not a pleasant thought, but it could be the MoBo. I had a PSU fry my 12V lead to the MoBo (the extra connection, not the main power cable) and it took weeks to figure out why I was getting random lock ups and failures to boot. Bad PSU and it cooked the input enough that I had to replace the MoBo.
Keep in touch.
5/31/13, 2:40 PDT. Just re-read your original posting, then did a little more research. You are probably tired of my 'stories' but before I lay mynext suggestion on you bare with me. I see that your case, according to CM, has only one fan (120mm rear); if you still have just this one fan for circulation
high temperatures could be the prob. Here's the quick story:
My friend has a really nice Alienware PC that came with an OEM GTX460 video card. His 24" monitor started freaking out and going to a 'pink' screen'. Pretty weird s#$% if you have never seen it. It was random. He is not a gamer so it wasn't because of heavy loading. We swapped cards for a week: I used his 460 he used one of mine. He never had a problem. I beat the crap out of his (3DMark looped for 14 hrs., games on highest settings possible etc.). Not a hiccup. Put it back in his PC; before I got home (5 minute trip) it pink screened. O.k. here's what we did. Installed MSI Afterburner and set the video card fan speed to 45% minimum. Stopped the problem. Period.
My guess, not enough airflow through the case to keep some small part of the vc cool, and the stock profile for the card wouldn't let it spool up at a low enough temp.
Again, sorry for the long story, but you might want to look at another fan or two if all the suggestions on this thread haven't worked: it could be some small part, maybe the CPU as someone else mentioned, that are just getting a little to warm.
Last thing. You vacuumed out the case; did you blow it out with canned air also, or did the vacuuming clean it out enough?

I took the motherboard out to install the new cooler so it was thoroughly cleaned and, to update about the case fans, I have 1 coolermaster 120mm high speed fan installed towards the front which is more effective than the rear pre-installed fan. Today the system hanged 2-3 minutes after booting with BSOD. Upon rebooting, it hanged on the boot screen itself with broken black vertical flickering lines, I tried power off - on 2 -3 times but it refused to boot further with same black lines. I opened the cabinet removed 1 of the 2 ram sticks, and it booted fine, I then put the removed ram stick back and removed the other stick, still it booted fine, now I have put back both the ram sticks and its working fine as if nothing has hapened, Now am again waiting for it to hang again :(

ankydu, you have had more patience with this then I would think possible. The sad part is it is looking like a MoBo problem. Your description last night (early this morning) is really similar to the problems I had as mentioned in my previous reply.
As an extreme measure/test, and I have never been lucky enough to know anyone that could help, do you know anyone with the same exact mobo who would be willing to loan it to you so you could put it in your pC and run it awhile?

I am pretty sure that mobo has a three year warranty on it, if so you might need to take it out and RMA it to ASUS.
If you do that call their customer service dept. and tech support and explain the problem, then keep in touch with those folks. Had one of their mobo do something similar a long time ago; they checked the board and said it was ok. I told them that they had to get the board warmed up for it to fail; took them a couple days but they finally saw it fail and replaced it.

Sadly my MOBO is outta warranty. And regarding the temps, I can run prime 95 all night without any hangups whatsover. I can play games with high settings though they run with hopeless framerates. But the system may hang with with just 1 browser window open. I cant find this board with any of my friends, they ve all upgraded to intel, somehow they dint like amd platform that much. So any more suggestions from anyone are still welcome !!!:??:

I tried a different PSU still it hanged, what is the most strangest thing is when it hanged I opened the cabinet and rebooted the system, this time I tried to fiddle with the RAM modules pressing and pushing them while the system was on and it hanged again, I rebooted again and tried the same thing and it hanged again, 3rd time also the same thing, BUT 4th time no matter how much I pushed and pulled the ram modules it didn't hang, so now am really clueless as whats wrong ???

Ankydu, what's up? Did you solve your problem and if so how? If not what else have you tried (as if you haven't already tried about everything!)?
