Near the end of last year I bought a new laptop that had a 640m and Intel HD 3000 Nvidia Optimus graphics setup. At the time there were no problems and everything ran great. A few months after that some games started breaking, and now the list of games that don't work is longer than the list of games that do work.

The error I get is pretty much the same every time. The games cannot launch because a problem with directx 9. The error is usually something along the lines of "Failed to create D3D9 Device" or "Could not find D3D9 Device". However this error is only when the game is running on the nvidia graphics and not the Intel integrated. If I launch the game with the integrated graphics the game will work, and I can change the settings to windowed or borderless if it exists within that game, and then relaunch on the nvidia dedicated graphics. All of the games will run in windowed mode and the problem only seems to happen in fullscreen. In GuildWars 2, the first game this happened in, after getting it into borderless and running it on the dedicated graphics I tried to change it back to fullscreen to see what would happen. I got an error saying "Graphics option not supported by your drivers"

If anyone else has had this problem and has found a solution or has not but can provide some insight would be appreciated.

Games that don't work
Guild Wars 2
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
Blacklight: Retribution
Halo: Combat Evolved
APB: Reloaded

Games that work
Team Fortress 2
Garry's Mod

My only idea of what this could be caused by is a USB powered portable monitor that I started using before this started.

Ok, you can try these :-

1. Go to C:\Counter-Strike: Global Offensive\Config
2. Open Default Engine
3. Find the following lines: Res X and Res Y
4. Set the values to your monitor’s native resolution
5. Save the file.
6. Enjoy.

This is just an example try these with other games.

Most IMPORTANT update your DirectX files, then if any game says any specific file(s) are missing, then search it on google you will find it.

The driver is the most up to date, and that other solution is the same one I saw on the steam forums. It is a solution to a problem that I do not have however and only solves problems caused by having an odd native res, my screen res is 1600x900 so this solves nothing. I think it is a problem with the drivers, where nvidia broke their drivers somewhere down the line. The only thing I can think of that would cause this to happen out of the blue and not from the start would be a faulty driver update, or installing a new display device (such as the USB powered monitor I mentioned), this is something that I will look into a little more.
