i had 4x4g ram sticks in my gaming desktop and just recently had a corrupted os so when i took it in to get fixed i was told to take 2 of the ram sticks out because they are 2 different voltages i was having blue screens and shockwave crashes alot untill i had a new os installed and took the 2 sticks of ram out my question is would the 2 different voltages have caused those kinds of problems cause if not i would really like to put them back in my desktop

but would it cause my os to be corrupted just asking cause i have a warranty with this desktop and wanted to know if i bought all 4 sticks of ram already installed on it if that would be covered in the warranty

If you bought those RAM yourself and installed it, then it would void the warranty. Warranties don't cover damages that you caused. Otherwise, I'd buy something, break it, and get a new one. It's not a huge issue to buy RAM with mix voltages, but it would be bad to run them at mix voltages. You could've increased 2 of the RAM modules' voltages or under-volt them to match the other two.

It can cause a lot of frequent BSOD and possibly damage your RAM modules. I don't think it would corrupt the OS unless you had a lot of BSOD.

.

No they came already installed on my tower when I bought it basically the guy I bought my pc from built it the night before I bought I have not changed anything on it except taking out the 2 sticks of ram and yes i did have a lot of bsod thats why i finally took it back in to him to get repaired

Whoever built it, had no idea what he was doing, not only do you NOT mix DRAM of different voltages...period....it's never a good idea to even mix packages of DRAM of the same exact model #....with DDR3, tolerances are too tight, XMP only works by the packaged set, and the reason they sell different size packages of sticks is to ensure you get the number of sticks you need and that they are tested to work together properly

Well, mixing non packaged sets should be ok.

But I agree do not mix different timings, speeds and certainly not voltages.

The voltage may not be per module so there is no way to run all the modules at the correct voltage causing instability etc...

Mixing non-packaged sets is OK? Makes no sense unless you're getting them out of a barrel....and it's not a good idea with DDR3, I've been helping I don't know how many people on these forums that have listened to all the 'experts' here saying 'Yeah, just get RAM with the same timings and voltages', not that easy, on occasion it can work, but more often than not it doesn't - appr 85% of DRAM that is RMAed as 'not working' is a result of people mixing it with other sticks (on the advice of these self claimed 'experts' .... and funny thing when tested, in almost all cases, there's nothing wrong with the DRAM that was RMAed

I am running RAM sticks that are the same model but not bought as a set. Works perfectly.

Then again, it is only running 1066MHz so that could be less critical.

While it can happen with any mixed sets, 1600 and up is where the most problems are encountered, and as I've said throughout the forums, it won't be a problem every time and why I've explained why they package sets of different sizes amounts, those sets are tested to work together,,,,if it were so easy to mix, all they'd do is sell single sticks and make more money on them....but it is a problem and they would see RMAs skyrocket if selling only single sticks
