hey guys,
i had my FX8350 and HD 7870 all figured out until i realised that i could get an FX6300 and a HD 7950. i am aware that i5 3570k is better than FX8530 for gaming so should i get i5 with HD 7870?

which one would perform better and would the FX6300 bottleneck the HD 7950?

Thanks in advance:)

is it possible to overclock the 3570?

models without "k" have their multiplier locked and therefore does not overclock

If you mean the Intel Core i5-3350P...not so much. But there is little point to OC an i5 for gaming. It is not going to make much of a difference in game. If you have apps that would do better with an OC outside gaming, then sure i5k might be something to talk about. But it is what 40 bucks more plus the cost of a CPU cooler at around 25-30 bucks. So 70 more to not gain much...

As for the 7870 xt..I have it paired with an i5 (2500k) and max out every game I play at 1080p. BF3,skyrim,TR,Borderlands,ect....

think of cpus as like the king and the vcard as the queen when it comes to priority. you gotta have the cpu be a beast in order for the vcard to work beautifully.

so if at anytime you start thinking things like, "should i drop CPU for better GPU?", just kick yourself in the face. you should NEVER drop CPU power for a better GPU unless higher resolution is an absolute must. but you will be seeing lower framerates due to the king being derrrrrrr.

what are you smoking o_O

modern top-tier CPUs are almost all overpowered for gaming... only when you have a top tier GPU, such as a 7970, 7950, or 670/680 on the Nvidia side, should you start worrying about CPU bottlenecks (that is of course, given you're buying a current generation, mid-level CPU)

i'm not smoking anything. i'm just sayin you should never dumb down your cpu to increase video card. that's all and that's backed up by just how computers are built at this time. vcard is only as good as how quickly your cpu is. the 3570k gets its butt kicked by a lot of modern games (like gw2) even in 1080p if you're a 60fps steady gamer freak like me (dips down in the 30fps with a 680gtx). sure it's also due to poor optimization but to say any current cpu can handle anything is rubbish. and to answer the op's question in his post, bro, just look at the stats. amd is so retarded compared to intel. sure if price is such an important factor, go amd. but it's not even competitive anymore for FPS in games. 3570k = awesome. just google the benchmarks on anandtech or any site. amd is the king of price/quality ratio for sure. are you kidding me the 8350 is amazing for how cheap it is. but it doesn't mean it's good for games. it's great for everything else, but games are designed for like 2 cores. it's just an awkward time for manufacturers. yeah we got more cores that people still aren't using in their games!!!

i'm not trying to sound pompous or anything and i know it probably sound likes i am. i just write how i talk on forums and i hope you don't take it personally. the vcard is essentially the cpu's painter. if the cpu doesn't even have all the ideas in place, the vcard can only paint as fast as the cpu thinks. that's just how modern pc's are wired. maybe down the road video cards will be more centralized, but until that day comes, the cpu holds the "buck stops here" sign.

look at the detailed, meticulous benchmarks here presented on anandtech, peace out :)

definitely shows the 8350's good enough for single monitor gaming. who cares about a few FPS drop when you're saving like $50... as with all things, building is about BALANCE, nothing is "king". an i7 3770K OCed 5.0Ghz will still give you crap fps when you give it a gt650...

k bro. they don't call it a central processing unit for nothin. it's obviously the most important part of the pc. therefore the pc is only as good as the cpu. so there is an heirarchy. if you're talking about price, then yeah there's balance involved. but a cpu has the last say in everything.

this isn't an opinion. it's literally how computer architecture works.

too many forums with "low framerate! i don't get it! i have a gtx titan!!!1" yeah well maybe it's because your cpu's retarded. builders who never grew up with computers in the 80s think since VIDEO games are VIDEO, the VIDEO cards must control how awesome the VIDEO games are. i'm not saying this is you, nor would i ever put down anyone on tom's because we're all inherently awesome just being registered here. but i just want to make sure the OP realizes how important a CPU is compared to a video card.

Laughable because of the fact that some games REQUIRE you to overclock the cpu to get smooth frame rates.

It's all about what level of performance you are willing to settle at.

And yes, there is a king, it's called an overclocked 3570k.

um dude, that's why I said balance is key...

say you have $600 bucks for a budget gaming rig, no, you don't spend most of it on a 680 or even a 670... but neither do you blow $300+ on a 3770K either, you get something like an i3 or a FX6300, look at what you have left over, and probably get a 7790 or something. you won't be maxing out anything, but you'll have a better experience than a 680 with a core duo, or a 640 with an i7 3770k...

Yes, I understand that the CPU is central in computer architecture and it's where everything come from, I'm just telling you, a king with no subjects, or idiot subjects, doesn't get much done either...

i agree. it is true that a lone king isn't very powerful without its subjects.

Its true that the CPU is very important, however its not worth having a super high end CPU with a low end GPU.

If you are on a limited budget, for games it can often be a good idea to have a more mid range CPU with a mid range GPU, rather than high end cpu with low end gpu.
