I do know that the 4th gen Intel CPUs wont be compatible with this socket. Although if I am going with intel, I'll only be getting a low end i3 probably sandy bridge. On the amd side, I'm going to get a quad athlon II or phenom II. So which one is better? I'll be using this for general use and gaming.

In my opinion i3 doesn't make sense anymore. Its lower core count and smaller cache puts it at a disadvantage allready in some situations and I expect it to perfom even worse in the future relative to competition. At the i3 price range the FX-4350/FX-6350 are better chips. If that's not enough performance then the next step would be an i5 at around $180. The main attraction of the Phenom II is the price but it's an older chip so there likely won't be as many architecture specific optimisations for it in the software as time goes on.

Heres a small snapshot of the competetive landscape:

In short I'd decide between (ordered by lowest price)...

I probably cannot afford a pile driver CPU. I could kind of afford the i3 because its on sale. Which socket would be better? On the Intel side I would only get the i3s...

Enjoo, if you want Intel, I'll suggest and Intel. However, you can afford Piledriver considering AMD CPU's are cheaper than Intel. But performance of the 4300 just a little lower than i3 (not incredibly noticeable).

The Core i3 will provide you with better performance than an Athlon or Phenom for games and general use. In the future you can upgrade to an Ivy Bridge CPU which is more powerful than AMD's current line PileDriver FX CPUs in general use and games. There are a few exceptions when it comes to games; I think ARMA 2 runs better on an FX-8350 as opposed to an i5-3570k. Crysis 3 is somewhat mixed, some benchmarks shows the FX-8350 provides better performance while others show the i5-3570k as being better. Steamroller seems to be the last AM3+ CPU that will be released by AMD. It is unknown how it will stack up against Ivy Bridge. It's expected to be released either at the end of the 2013 or early/mid 2014.

What is the performance of the haswell CPUs? I don't care if I get Intel or amd...
I'm leaning toward getting the phenom x4 then maybe upgrading to a steamroller CPU a lot later on.

It's speculated that Haswell will have a performance increase of 10-15%. LGA1155 is dead. Haswell will be 1150. So if you are looking for upgrade, buy a AMD processor with an AM3+ motherboard. If you want the latest tech, wait till June to get Haswell.

If you were to pick the phenom with a possibility of an upgrade or a 4th gen i3, which one would you choose?
